Lancia Musa
First generation of the 1.3 MultiJet with 70 hp. Proven Fiat diesel, economical but low on power. Timing chain instead of belt, check EGR valve and turbo.
Underpowered
51 kW for a compact MPV is too little — it labours on the open road.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The VGT turbo of the 1.3 JTD 188A9000 is prone to bent guide vanes from particulate deposits. Neglected air filter maintenance is often a contributing factor.
Symptoms: Power loss, whistling on acceleration, smoke from exhaust, turbo spinning unevenly
The timing chain of the 1.3 MultiJet (188A9000) can wear prematurely when oil change intervals are exceeded. Replacement is recommended from 100,000–120,000 km.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, engine noise; in the worst case engine malfunction from a jumped chain
Carbon build-up and sticking of the EGR valve is common on the 1.3 JTD 188A9000. City driving and short trips promote soot formation that blocks the valve.
Symptoms: Judder at medium load, fault code entry, rough idle, poor throttle response
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
The subframe and underside are at high risk of rust on older Musa examples. Missing or worn cavity sealing accelerates the corrosion process. MOT/TÜV-relevant on load-bearing structures.
The right front control arm can jump out of its mounting. Lancia/Fiat replacement parts do not last particularly long, so repairs can recur. Safety-critical.
The AC compressor runs roughly and causes noticeable vibration. The automatic climate control blows only cold air despite maximum heat settings. Frequently linked to a faulty cooling fan.
The electric power steering responds with a delay and shows sporadic jerking when turning. Also known from the platform-related Fiat Idea and Lancia Ypsilon.
Broken front suspension springs have been reported at around 89,000 km. Metal fatigue causes fractures that can damage tyres and lead to dangerous handling.
Brake pads crumbled on one vehicle despite regular servicing at a Lancia dealer from around 89,000 km. A quality issue with OEM pads has been reported.
The window regulator mechanisms on the Musa are prone to failure and break regularly. The problem is shared with the Fiat Idea and Lancia Ypsilon platform. Repair per door approx. 80–250 €.
Interior plastic parts are poorly deburred and inaccurately fitted. Rattles and creaks are common, clips work loose over time. Typical Fiat Group problem of this era.
