Kia 2.0 MPI AWD
Two-litre naturally aspirated engine from the Nu family without direct injection — therefore no GDI-typical carbonisation issues. Fundamentally robust, but higher mileages (from approx. 100,000 km) reveal weaknesses in piston rings and oil consumption. Kia has issued TSB ENG222 for oil burning. Regular oil level checks and short oil change intervals (max. 10,000 km) are essential.
AWD with NA engine — sluggish
155 hp NA with all-wheel drive and auto. The combination consumes a lot of power and feels underpowered.
Engine Weaknesses 7
The oil control rings can become stuck in the ring grooves by carbon deposits and lose their sealing function. Oil enters the combustion chamber and burns, sometimes without visible blue smoke. Kia issued TSB ENG222 specifically for this defect.
Symptoms: Oil level drops noticeably between changes (>0.5 L/1,000 km), occasional brief blue smoke on cold start, engine oil warning light
The G4NA's oil control rings become gummed up by carbon deposits and stop scraping oil from the cylinder walls. The engine then burns significant quantities of oil. Under the Kia Engine II Settlement, extended warranty up to 15 years/150,000 km with a complete service history.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start or overrun, oil level drops between service intervals, fault code P0420 (catalyst efficiency).
Metal swarf from crankshaft manufacture blocks the oil bores of the connecting rod bearings and causes premature bearing wear through to engine failure. Affected models: Sorento XM 2.4 MPI, Sportage, Optima 2.0 GDI (2011–2015). Worldwide recall, 295,000 vehicles.
Symptoms: Knocking from the engine block, oil pressure warning flashing, engine warning light flashing continuously (engine protection mode active), power reduction.
The hydraulic chain tensioner loses its clamping force at higher mileages. The timing chain strikes the guide rails on cold start. With continued operation there is a risk of chain skip and valve damage. Regular oil changes significantly extend service life.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling or clattering from the engine bay for 5–30 seconds on cold start, disappears after warm-up
The mechanical water pump of the G4NA shows an elevated failure rate from around 100,000 km. Leaks at the shaft seal lead to coolant loss and risk of overheating. Seals and coolant hoses are also critical.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops without visible external leak, temperature gauge rises unusually, puddles under the vehicle with a sweet smell
When piston rings allow oil through, oil ash poisons the catalyst. The substrate clogs or overheats from post-combustion of fuel. The result is misfires, power loss and an engine fault warning. Typical from 80,000 km on vehicles with oil consumption.
Symptoms: Engine warning light (P0420 cat efficiency), power loss, rough running, occasional sulphur smell
Through the G4NA's high oil consumption, burnt oil coats the catalytic converter substrate and reduces its efficiency. With continued operation the exhaust backpressure rises and engine power drops further.
Symptoms: Fault code P0420 (catalyst efficiency below threshold), increased fuel consumption, sulphurous-metallic exhaust smell.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
A short circuit in the ABS/ESC unit can lead to engine bay fire. A worldwide recall was initiated for affected vehicles (mainly models with Smart Cruise Control 2015–2020) to replace the fuses.
The 7-speed DCT on the Sportage QL tends to judder and shift pauses especially in city traffic and when manoeuvring. Software updates can help; severe cases require clutch pack replacement.
On some Sportage QL models, the electronic parking brake doesn't release when a drive gear is selected. The cause is often insufficient voltage supply on one side. Kia is familiar with the issue and repairs it under warranty.
Steering joints and tie rod ends are listed as frequent advisory items on the Sportage QL in the MOT report. The electric power steering can also become uneven at higher mileage.
The Sportage QL's AC condenser sits exposed behind the radiator and is frequently damaged by stone chips, causing refrigerant loss. Repair costs around €400–600.
The exhaust system on the Sportage QL rusts comparatively quickly, particularly the rear silencer. On vehicles over 6 years old, holes and MOT advisories are a risk.
The Sportage QL's suspension shows accelerated bearing wear due to the vehicle's weight. MOT inspectors frequently flag worn control arm bushings and anti-roll bar bushings.
