Kia 1.6 CRDi
Euro 6 successor to the U2 diesel with SCR urea injection and revised DPF. More complex exhaust system demands attentive maintenance — top up AdBlue regularly.
Base diesel for easy-going drivers
136 hp diesel in the Sportage QL is too little for an SUV of this size. Struggles on inclines, laboured on the motorway.
Engine Weaknesses 5
Like its predecessor the D4FB, the D4FE needs sufficient speed and engine load for active DPF regeneration. Short-trip use prevents complete regeneration cycles and causes blockage.
Symptoms: DPF warning, power reduction, increased fuel consumption, regeneration fails
Even on the newer D4FE (Euro 6), EGR cooler and valve eventually clog. A faulty EGR can increase consumption, worsen emissions and in rare cases cause cracks in the EGR cooler.
Symptoms: Judder at low rpm, EGR fault code, white smoke in cold weather (cooler crack)
The Euro 6 diesel D4FE is particularly prone to carbonisation of the EGR valve and EGR cooler at low load levels. Frequent short trips accelerate the process considerably.
Symptoms: Power loss, limp-home mode, judder at low rpm, fault code P0401/P0404.
The D4FE's particulate filter blocks up in frequent urban use. Due to the higher exhaust aftertreatment demanded by the Euro 6 standard, the DPF is more sensitive to incomplete regeneration cycles.
Symptoms: DPF warning light on, engine power dropping, increased consumption, limp-home mode possible.
Like its predecessor the D4FB, the D4FE is also prone to premature DMF fatigue in city traffic with frequent clutch use.
Symptoms: Vibration and rattling on pull-away and cold start, rough idle.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
A short circuit in the ABS/ESC unit can lead to engine bay fire. A worldwide recall was initiated for affected vehicles (mainly models with Smart Cruise Control 2015–2020) to replace the fuses.
On some Sportage QL models, the electronic parking brake doesn't release when a drive gear is selected. The cause is often insufficient voltage supply on one side. Kia is familiar with the issue and repairs it under warranty.
Steering joints and tie rod ends are listed as frequent advisory items on the Sportage QL in the MOT report. The electric power steering can also become uneven at higher mileage.
The Sportage QL's AC condenser sits exposed behind the radiator and is frequently damaged by stone chips, causing refrigerant loss. Repair costs around €400–600.
The exhaust system on the Sportage QL rusts comparatively quickly, particularly the rear silencer. On vehicles over 6 years old, holes and MOT advisories are a risk.
The Sportage QL's suspension shows accelerated bearing wear due to the vehicle's weight. MOT inspectors frequently flag worn control arm bushings and anti-roll bar bushings.
