48V mild hybrid — sprightly in daily use

180 hp MHEV in the modern Sportage NQ5 delivers smooth progress. Not a sports model, but pleasantly direct.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! Recall: short circuit in clutch actuator (KBA 14641R)

Ceed/XCeed PHEV models (built 11/11/2019–14/08/2023) were recalled: moisture in the HCA connector can cause a short circuit and engine bay fire. 85,219 vehicles worldwide, 22,284 in Germany. Identical issue to the Niro.

Symptoms: Sudden loss of drive, burning smell or smoke in the engine bay, warning lights.

!! Intake valve carbon build-up from GDi technology

The G4NN T-GDi Hybrid uses direct injection without port injection. Carbon deposits on intake valves are a well-known characteristic of this engine family and should be checked regularly.

Symptoms: Gradual power loss, rough idle, increased fuel consumption.

200–700 € from 80,000 km
!! 12V starter battery drains during extended parking

On PHEV/hybrid models with the G4NN, the 12V battery only charges while the vehicle is running or plugged in. Extended parking without charging can drain it and cause starting difficulties.

Symptoms: Vehicle won't start after extended parking, warning messages in the instrument cluster, infotainment unresponsive.

150–350 €
! Oil consumption at higher mileage

The G4NN Smartstream 2.0 MPI is the successor to the G4NB and shows improved oil consumption figures. However, at very long service intervals, piston rings and valve stem seals can still wear excessively.

Symptoms: More frequent top-ups required, slight blue smoke on cold start

400–1,200 € from 120,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Other Recall: brake servo filter damage

A design fault in the brake servo pump filter insert can cause the brake boost to unexpectedly reduce, increasing stopping distance. A software update resolves the issue.

! Interior Plastic noises in interior — B-pillar

Multiple NQ5 owners report vibrating plastic trim in the area of the B-pillar and passenger seat. Hard plastic clips without foam padding cause creaking on poor roads.

0–200 € from 20,000 km
! Body Wind noise from door seals and door mirrors

NQ5 owners report intrusive wind noise at the driver's door and door mirrors. Workshop visits sometimes provide no lasting improvement; the door seals don't sit optimally.

50–300 € from 15,000 km
! Electronics Hybrid models — 12V battery warnings

Owners of NQ5 mild hybrid models report repeated battery warnings in the Kia Connect app, even though the battery has been charged. In some cases, the 12V starter battery had to be replaced multiple times.

120–250 € from 30,000 km
! Brakes Brake discs develop rust quickly

Sportage NQ5 owners criticise heavily rusting brake discs. Surface rust appears even after short standstill periods. On hybrid variants, the problem is amplified by frequent recuperation.

200–600 € from 50,000 km
! Steering Steering wheel vibrations at 100–130 km/h

Sportage NQ5 owners report steering wheel vibrations between 100 and 130 km/h that persist despite wheel balancing and RoadForce correction. The root cause has not been definitively established.

0–500 € from 20,000 km
! HVAC Air conditioning cools inadequately

Insufficient AC cooling performance is reported on the Sportage NQ5, attributed to low refrigerant or condenser problems. On PHEV variants, heating issues via the heat pump are known.

100–800 € from 40,000 km
