Kia 2.0 CRDi AWD

D4EA 2.0L CRDi (VGT) 140 hp Automatic All-wheel drive SUV 2004–2010
– Be Careful
Engine D4EA – Be Careful 4,000–18,500 €

Older common-rail diesel with variable turbine geometry. Strong torque, but have the EGR valve and injectors inspected at high mileage.

Fun Factor? Decent

Early turbo diesel with substance

140 hp CRDi in the old Sportage KM β€” strong and durable for an off-roader of the early 2000s. A diesel veteran.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Premature timing chain stretch

The D4EA is known for premature timing chain displacement. From around 120,000 km, reports of chain stretch and skip multiply; this can lead to engine damage with poor oil supply. Early maintenance is critical.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, poor running, misfires, engine warning light with camshaft fault codes

600–1,800 € from 120,000 km
!! Timing belt snaps without warning

The D4EA uses a timing belt (not a chain engine) with a replacement interval of 80,000–90,000 km. A snap immediately causes engine damage (valve contact). Many used vehicles exceed the interval without a complete service history.

Symptoms: No warning β€” sudden engine failure, possibly a loud bang, engine turns over without compression.

500–5,000 € from 90,000 km
!! Injector failure due to poor fuel quality

The Bosch injectors of the D4EA are sensitive to poor fuel quality. Mineral contamination and sludge can cause malfunction. Fuel additives help extend service intervals.

Symptoms: Rough running, hesitation on acceleration, smoke on cold start, injector fault code

400–1,500 € from 100,000 km
!! VGT turbocharger seized by carbon deposits

The variable-geometry turbocharger of the D4EA is prone to carbon deposits on the moving vanes with frequent short-trip use and missed oil changes, severely restricting boost pressure.

Symptoms: Significant power loss especially under high load, whistling noise, fault code P0299, limp-home mode possible.

800–2,500 € from 150,000 km
!! Oil sludge from inadequate crankcase ventilation

The D4EA builds up oil sludge on frequent short runs and extended oil change intervals due to inadequate crankcase ventilation. In the worst case a blocked oil strainer leads to oil starvation and engine damage.

Symptoms: Oil level drops despite servicing, thick or lumpy oil on change, engine warning light, oil pressure warning.

300–3,000 € from 150,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Rust Underbody and axle corrosion

From the fifth year of operation, underbody rust exceeds the class average. Axle suspension, welds and fuel lines show corrosion particularly. Pre-purchase underbody inspection recommended.

300–1,500 € from 120,000 km
!! Suspension Worn axle bearings

The Sportage's high vehicle weight stresses the axle bearings above average. Worn-out bearings on the front and rear axle lead to MOT advisories and deteriorating driving stability.

200–600 € from 100,000 km
! Brakes Parking brake with above-average advisory rate

The parking brake on the Sportage KM shows significantly above-average advisory rates at MOT inspections. Seized brake cables and shoes are typical causes.

100–350 € from 100,000 km
! Steering Steering rack with play and stiffness

From 80,000–120,000 km, the hydraulic power steering develops play in the rack or becomes stiff after long motorway runs. Steering wheel turns sluggishly and with resistance on return.

300–900 € from 100,000 km
! HVAC AC compressor and condenser failure

After 80,000–100,000 km, the AC compressor frequently fails through refrigerant loss or the condenser corrodes from road salt. Air conditioning suddenly stops cooling.

400–1,000 € from 90,000 km
! Cooling Thermostat faulty β€” heater doesn't warm up

Especially on diesel models, the operating temperature remains permanently low on short trips or with a faulty thermostat. Heating performance in winter is insufficient and the temperature gauge stays at its stop.

100–350 € from 100,000 km
