Kia 2.0 CRDi AWD

D4HA 2.0L CRDi (R) 150 hp Manual All-wheel drive SUV 2009–2014
– Be Careful
Engine D4HA – Be Careful 4,080–13,700 €

Robust inline four-cylinder diesel with common-rail injection and aluminium block. Solid reliability with good care — watch the EGR valve and particulate filter in urban use.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Large SUV, small diesel

150 hp in the large Sorento XM feels overwhelmed. Adequate for seven-seat duties, not suited for driving enjoyment.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Crankshaft damper pulley disintegrates

On the D4HA the crankshaft vibration damper is known to disintegrate: rubber buffers between the damper mass and the belt pulley detach and produce loud noises. Easily confused with timing chain noise.

Symptoms: Loud clacking or rattling from the engine bay on revving, the noise type resembles chain issues but does not occur at cold start

100–400 € from 120,000 km
!! EGR valve and cooler blocked by soot

The D4HA 2.0 CRDi in the Sportage QL/NQ5 is known for EGR problems. The EGR valve sticks in city driving and triggers fault codes. Regular cleaning or replacement is recommended from 100,000 km.

Symptoms: Judder under partial load, engine warning light EGR fault, poor performance below 2,000 rpm, elevated exhaust emissions

200–700 € from 100,000 km
!! DPF blockage in frequent urban use

Like all 2.0 CRDi generations, the D4HA needs speed and load for DPF regeneration. SUV-typical short-trip use leads to blockage. In the worst case, fuel dilution of the engine oil occurs.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, engine power reduction, regeneration warning tone, oil level rising (fuel ingress)

700–2,500 € from 120,000 km
!! DPF blockage on short trips

The 2.0 CRDi suffers from DPF blockage in frequent city driving. EGR-related soot loading accelerates accumulation; short trips prevent active regeneration.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, noticeably reduced power, greatly increased consumption, limp-home mode active.

900–2,200 € from 120,000 km
!! EGR valve carbonisation and failure

The D4HA's EGR valve is prone to carbonisation from soot deposits at higher mileages. EGR cooler leaks have also been reported.

Symptoms: Power loss, judder at low load, fault code P0401/P0404, limp-home mode.

400–1,000 € from 130,000 km
!! Turbo actuator failure (VGT actuator)

The VGT turbocharger of the D4HA can fail through carbonisation of the vane mechanism and failure of the electronic actuator. Vehicles with high mileage and heavy urban use are most commonly affected.

Symptoms: Significant power loss, limp-home mode, whistling from the turbo area, fault code P0299 (boost pressure too low).

1,000–2,500 € from 160,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Rust Rust on rear axle carrier

Rust through the rear axle carrier is a safety-critical finding on the Sorento XM. Affected vehicles severely compromise the structural integrity of the rear axle suspension. Workshop underbody inspections are strongly recommended.

500–3,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Other Recall: short circuit in door wiring

Kia recalled Sorento models from model years 2009–2010 due to possible short circuits in the door wiring. A faulty wiring harness in the front doors can cause short circuits that may lead to oil loss or a vehicle fire.

0–0 €
! Suspension Excessive front tyre wear (pre-facelift)

Before the 2012 facelift, the Sorento XM shows increased uneven front tyre wear. The cause is the suspension geometry of the first production series. Regular wheel alignment and early tyre rotation reduce wear.

80–400 € from 60,000 km
! Suspension Faulty anti-roll bars and suspension components

Anti-roll bar bushings and drop links wear above average on the heavy Sorento XM. Steering joints and ball joints are further critical points at MOT. Oil loss from engine and gearbox exceeds the class average.

100–500 € from 80,000 km
i Electronics Reversing camera and steering wheel button failures

The reversing camera on the Sorento XM tends to fail and shows no image or a distorted one. Steering wheel buttons for cruise control, audio and phone become unreliable or completely unresponsive with age.

100–500 € from 80,000 km
