Kia 1.5 T-GDi

G4FT 1.5L T-GDi (Smartstream) 160 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Coupé 2021–2024
– Be Careful
Engine G4FT – Be Careful 2,150–8,700 €

Modern four-cylinder turbo with Atkinson-cycle option and good efficiency. Oil changes important for turbo longevity — overall more robust than predecessor turbos.

Fun Factor? Decent

Sensible ProCeed for sensible buyers

160 hp is enough for relaxed driving in the ProCeed; those seeking fun should opt for the 204 hp GT.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! By-design enlarged piston ring gap causes blow-by

Smartstream engines have a by-design larger piston ring gap intended to compensate for high combustion temperatures. Side effect: excessive oil consumption through blow-by and accelerated carbon build-up.

Symptoms: Top-up needed between changes, increased fuel consumption, judder at operating temperature

600–2,000 € from 50,000 km
!! Carbon deposits on intake valves

As a direct-injection engine without port injection, the G4FT's intake valves are not washed by fuel. Elevated blow-by increases deposits compared with older Gamma engines.

Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation on throttle, noticeable power reduction from approx. 50,000 km

300–700 € from 50,000 km
!! Increased oil consumption documented

Increased oil consumption is documented as a known issue for the G4FT 1.5 T-GDi in the XCeed and Sportage NQ5. Owners have to top up regularly between service intervals.

Symptoms: Oil drops rapidly below minimum, no visible leak, no obvious smoke — classic combustion pattern.

400–1,500 € from 70,000 km
!! Recall: instrument cluster fails to start

Kia recalls Sportage NQ5 and Niro (prod. 2021–2022) due to a possible software fault in the instrument cluster that may stay dark on boot-up. 254,411 vehicles worldwide affected, 2,207 in Germany.

Symptoms: Dark instrument cluster after cold start, missing displays for speed, rpm and warning symbols.

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Other Recall: brake servo failure (2018–2020)

A design flaw in the tandem pump filter screen can interrupt oil supply and vacuum generation. An unexpected failure of the brake servo significantly increases stopping distances.

!! Electronics Electronic parking brake won't release

The electronic parking brake on the ProCeed CD can occasionally fail to release, holding the vehicle in place. The electric parking brake warning light comes on during driving and reappears after restart.

200–800 € from 50,000 km
! Other Electric parking brake occasionally sticks

The electric parking brake occasionally fails to release automatically when pulling away. Software updates have resolved the issue on most vehicles; remaining cases require mechanical intervention.

100–600 €
! Steering Steering clicks when turning

On the Kia Ceed CD the steering clicks when turning, especially at full lock. The cause is usually a worn rubber coupling on the EPS motor, which according to reports can become noticeable from as little as 25,000 km.

100–400 € from 50,000 km
! Suspension Rear axle rumbles over bumps

On the Kia Ceed CD SW, rumbling noises from the rear axle area are reported, particularly on uneven road surfaces. The cause is often rubber bushings of the torsion beam axle that have hardened over time.

150–500 € from 80,000 km
! HVAC Air conditioning cools inadequately

Insufficient AC cooling performance is documented for the Kia Ceed CD — a technical service bulletin exists. The cause is usually low refrigerant or a faulty expansion valve.

100–600 € from 80,000 km
! Body Panoramic roof: creaking and jamming

The optional panoramic roof on the ProCeed CD (and XCeed) tends to creak and jam. Particularly during temperature fluctuations the roof creaks loudly. The slide mechanism can jam, leaving the roof only partially openable or unable to open at all.

200–1,500 € from 40,000 km
i Interior Creaking centre console and armrest

The centre armrest on the ProCeed CD and Ceed CD creaks in cold weather at the slightest touch. Plastic trim inside generates creaking noises perceived as a quality defect. Often fixable by retrofitting sound deadening.

0–100 € from 20,000 km
