The G4LD 1.4 T-GDi in the Ceed/ProCeed shows known timing chain problems: chain stretch, tensioner skip and in severe cases engine damage. Early CD production years especially affected.
Symptoms: Fault code P0016 (crankshaft/camshaft position implausible), judder during acceleration, loud rattle on start-up
The G4LD 1.4 T-GDi is prone to timing chain elongation like its G4LC relatives, particularly with exceeded oil change intervals (recommended: max. 15,000 km). Over-stretching leads to engine damage.
Symptoms: Rattling from the timing chain area on cold start, engine warning light, camshaft sensor fault, rough running after cold start.
As a direct-injection engine the G4LD shares the fundamental GDi problem of all Kappa turbo engines: carbon deposits on intake valves. In the Ceed PHEV combination with the electric motor, the cleaning interval is particularly important.
Symptoms: Poor throttle response, rough idle, noticeable power reduction under partial load
As a direct-injection engine the G4LD does not clean the intake valves with fuel. Soot residues from crankcase ventilation build up on the valves and reduce gas flow.
Symptoms: Rough running in cold operation, power loss at low rpm, increased fuel consumption.
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
A design flaw in the tandem pump filter screen can interrupt oil supply and vacuum generation. An unexpected failure of the brake servo significantly increases stopping distances.
The electronic parking brake on the ProCeed CD can occasionally fail to release, holding the vehicle in place. The electric parking brake warning light comes on during driving and reappears after restart.
The electric parking brake occasionally fails to release automatically when pulling away. Software updates have resolved the issue on most vehicles; remaining cases require mechanical intervention.
On the Kia Ceed CD the steering clicks when turning, especially at full lock. The cause is usually a worn rubber coupling on the EPS motor, which according to reports can become noticeable from as little as 25,000 km.
On the Kia Ceed CD SW, rumbling noises from the rear axle area are reported, particularly on uneven road surfaces. The cause is often rubber bushings of the torsion beam axle that have hardened over time.
Insufficient AC cooling performance is documented for the Kia Ceed CD — a technical service bulletin exists. The cause is usually low refrigerant or a faulty expansion valve.
The optional panoramic roof on the ProCeed CD (and XCeed) tends to creak and jam. Particularly during temperature fluctuations the roof creaks loudly. The slide mechanism can jam, leaving the roof only partially openable or unable to open at all.
The centre armrest on the ProCeed CD and Ceed CD creaks in cold weather at the slightest touch. Plastic trim inside generates creaking noises perceived as a quality defect. Often fixable by retrofitting sound deadening.
