Kia 1.0

G4HE 1.0L (Epsilon) 61 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2004–2011
– Be Careful
Engine G4HE – Be Careful 1,310–4,700 €

Simple four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with modest power, designed purely for urban use. Reliable with regular oil maintenance, but no meaningful power reserves.

Fun Factor? Not Really

City transport without ambition

61 hp is enough for the city, and nothing more. The ancient engine makes the Picanto pure transport without any dynamics.

Engine Weaknesses 3

!! Crankshaft bolt too short from the factory

Early Picanto SA (2004–2007) were fitted with an undersized crankshaft bolt. The belt pulley and trigger wheel can move back and forth on the crankshaft, damaging the crankshaft position sensor.

Symptoms: Engine hesitation, power loss, engine warning light illuminates, fault code P0335 or P0340 in the fault memory.

80–300 € from 60,000 km
!! Camshaft and crankshaft position sensor defective

The camshaft and crankshaft position sensors on the G4HE fail frequently. Often caused by the crankshaft bolt defect, but independent sensor failures also occur.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, fault code P0340 (camshaft sensor), irregular idle, starting problems.

50–200 € from 80,000 km
!! Overheating tendency with poor cooling maintenance

The G4HE tends to overheat according to technical documentation if the cooling system is not serviced regularly. The consequence can be cylinder head damage.

Symptoms: Coolant temperature gauge rises excessively, steaming engine, coolant loss.

200–800 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Suspension Worn suspension and steering joints

Suspension and steering joints are among the most common MOT advisories on the Picanto SA. Components wear above average with age and lead to inspection failures.

150–500 € from 100,000 km
! Brakes Above-average brake disc wear

Brake discs and pads on the Picanto SA wear 30% more frequently than on other city cars according to MOT reports. Rear brake calipers corrode and jam the parking brake.

120–350 € from 70,000 km
! Rust Rust on exhaust system and underbody

Older Picanto SA models rust on the exhaust system to an above-average degree. The upper cross brace in the engine bay (model years up to 2006) and the rear axle carrier are also susceptible to corrosion.

200–800 € from 120,000 km
! Electronics Faulty electric window regulators

Electric window regulators on the Picanto SA fail with increasing age. Motors and guide rails wear out, especially with frequent use in summer. Repair often requires replacing the entire unit.

80–250 € from 100,000 km
! HVAC AC condenser corrodes from road salt

On the Picanto SA, the AC condenser corrodes through road salt and environmental influences. The aluminium fins oxidise, leading to a gradual refrigerant loss. AC typically fails after 3–5 years.

200–600 € from 70,000 km
! Steering Power steering pump leaks and noisy

On the Picanto SA, the hydraulic power steering pump becomes leaky or loses fluid from around 80,000 km due to seal wear. A squealing noise when turning, especially when stationary, is the first sign.

150–500 € from 90,000 km
i Electronics Faulty rear lights and dipped headlamps

Faulty lighting units are the most common advisory reason for the Picanto SA in MOT reports. Rear lights and dipped headlights fail early, often due to moisture ingress into the housings.

30–200 € from 80,000 km
i Interior Interior rattles and wobbly seats

On the Picanto SA, rattling interior trim and wobbly seats are a common long-term issue. The plastic quality is low for the price segment and the attachment points loosen over time.

50–200 € from 80,000 km
