Kia 2.0 CVVT
Naturally aspirated engine with adequate power for the mid-range. Solid reliability — replace the belt drive per manufacturer specification.
Relaxed mile-munching setup
164 hp in the Optima JF is enough for brisk cruising. The 2.0 CVVT is nothing more than an honest all-round engine.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The Nu 2.0 GDI (G4NB) is at the centre of a class-action lawsuit against Hyundai/Kia over oil consumption. Piston rings and valve stem seals wear prematurely. Kia issued a TSB offering engine replacement with documented consumption.
Symptoms: Frequent top-ups required, blue smoke under acceleration, oil pressure warning, engine seizure reports
As a direct-injection engine without port injection, the G4NB's intake valves are regularly affected by oil carbon. In combination with the oil consumption, deposits on the G4NB are more pronounced than on other GDi engines.
Symptoms: Judder under partial load, rough idle, increased fuel consumption, hard starting after extended inactivity
Fouled direct injectors on the G4NB lead to uneven injection, misfires and ignition failures. Poor fuel quality accelerates the process considerably.
Symptoms: Misfire fault code P030x, judder under load, increased fuel consumption
Cases of increased oil consumption have been documented for the G4NB 2.0 CVVT, where owners had to top up after just a few thousand kilometres. Cause: worn piston rings or valve stem seals.
Symptoms: Dropping oil level, occasional bluish exhaust smoke, oil warning light if neglected.
The EGR valve carbons up over time on the G4NB and can stick. Fault code P0403 (EGR control circuit) is a typical consequence.
Symptoms: Engine warning light, power loss, rough running, fault code P0403.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Over 500,000 Kia Optima vehicles were recalled due to faulty ABS systems. A short circuit in the anti-lock braking system can cause a fire. A further recall concerned the hydraulic ABS valve, which can lead to leaks and short circuits.
The Optima JF's suspension is prone to spring breakage, which creates an unsafe driving condition. Coil springs, particularly on the rear axle, break without warning. Especially common on vehicles that are used frequently on poor roads.
Brake calipers and discs on the Optima JF show a strong tendency to rust. Uncoated brake disc faces rust heavily after rain. Stuck calipers lead to uneven pad wear and increased fuel consumption.
The Optima JF's automatic gearbox (DCT/torque converter) shows shudder on shifts, particularly at low speeds and in city traffic. Software updates can improve shift behaviour; mechanical wear at higher mileage remains.
On the Optima JF, owners report mould forming on the AC evaporator, causing a musty smell when switched on. According to forum reports, the system needed cleaning multiple times.
On the Optima JF, a noticeable resistance point in the steering is reported at temperatures below 13°C, as if someone were holding the steering column. On some vehicles the entire steering had to be replaced.
The infotainment system on the Optima JF occasionally freezes and needs restarting. The reversing camera responds with a delay or shows no image. Software issues can be partially resolved by dealer updates.
