Kia 1.6 HEV
Atkinson-cycle engine optimised specifically for hybrid applications. Efficient and reliable in combination with the electric motor β have the high-voltage system inspected by a specialist after any accident.
Hybrid economy master with driving comfort
141 hp system output in the Niro HEV β efficient in city traffic, not a sports car, but surprisingly agile for an eco car.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Moisture can penetrate the connector of the hydraulic clutch actuator (HCA) and cause a short circuit. Kia recalled 643,307 Niro and Ceed PHEV vehicles worldwide (KBA 14640R/14641R, Nov. 2015βAug. 2023).
Symptoms: Hybrid warning light, unusual smell from the engine bay, in extreme cases visible smoke or fire
The dry DCT in the Niro Hybrid shows judder and grabbing in urban driving. Broken springs in the dual-mass flywheel cause the flywheel to knock against the clutch. Kia replaced affected units under warranty.
Symptoms: Judder on pull-away or slow manoeuvring, rattling or grinding at low rpm, gear feel deteriorates
The G4LE 1.6 GDi Hybrid (Atkinson cycle) uses direct injection without port injection. Intake valves can become sooted over time, reducing efficiency and power.
Symptoms: Power loss especially after cold start, rough idle at high mileage.
In hybrid operation the G4LE petrol engine often runs only briefly or not at all. Especially in winter, the spark plugs can develop oily electrodes, leading to misfires and elevated emissions.
Symptoms: Judder on pull-away after extended parking, elevated emissions on cold start, occasional fault code P030x
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
The dry 6-speed DCT in the Niro DE shows characteristic judder when pulling away in stop-and-go traffic from 40,000β60,000 km. Recalibration can help; in severe cases, replacement is needed.
On model years 2017β2019, the AC compressor's magnetic clutch relay can become faulty, causing the compressor to switch on and off irregularly before failing completely. Costs are considerable.
Multiple ADAC call-outs reported for drained 12V starter batteries, partly caused by control units remaining in standby. Particularly on vehicles that are driven infrequently.
Since the Niro DE predominantly recuperates in hybrid mode, the mechanical brakes are rarely used. This leads to heavy rust formation on the brake discs, especially at the rear, which can result in MOT advisories.
On some Kia Niro DE models, clicking noises during acceleration and braking are registered, caused by a loose lower support bearing on the front axle. Finding confirmed by GTΓ inspectors.
On the Kia Niro DE, the electric power steering develops a noticeable resistance in the centred position that creates an unpleasant feedback during minor steering corrections. Multiple owners report this phenomenon independently.
