Kia Forte 2.0 GDi EX/SX
The Nu 2.0 GDi is the direct-injection variant of the Nu engine family producing 173 hp / 129 kW. Like all early GDi units it is prone to intake valve carbon buildup and elevated oil consumption at higher mileages. The 2014–2015 model years were subject to NHTSA recall 20V-750 for engine fire risk; verifying KSDS software and engine condition is essential when buying older examples.
GDi punch in the sedan — with a carbon caveat
The 173-hp Nu GDi EX/SX has noticeably more bite than the 1.8L base. Well-maintained with occasional walnut blasting it stays trouble-free long term. Early model years (2014–2015) carry the engine fire recall — always verify service history.

NHTSA recall 20V-750 covers Forte YD 2014–2015 with the Nu GDi engine: piston damage and oil loss can cause overheating and engine compartment fire. Dealers inspect for leaks, run engine tests, and update the Knock Sensor Detection System software at no charge.

Nu GDi engines show rising oil consumption from around 80,000 km (50,000 miles). The root cause is wider piston ring gap tolerances allowing oil to enter combustion. Typical symptom: blue smoke on cold start or under load.

NHTSA recall 21V-260 / SC210 covers Forte YD 2017–2018 with the 2.0L Nu MPI engine: foreign particles can jam the oil pump, causing oil pump failure and severe engine damage. Dealers inspect and replace affected parts at no charge.
NHTSA recall 22V-031 covers Forte YD 2017–2018: the ACU cover can contact a memory chip on the circuit board and damage the electrical circuit, preventing airbags from deploying in a crash. Dealers inspect and replace the ACU at no charge.
Forte YD 2014–2021 models without UVO connectivity lack an electronic engine immobilizer. During the TikTok-driven 'Kia Boys' theft wave in the US, the car could be stolen in under 90 seconds. Kia offers a free anti-theft software update; adding a steering wheel club lock is also advisable.
Forte YD 2014–2016 with Nu engines show an above-average rate of sudden engine failure without warning. CarComplaints documents 628 complaints for the 2014 model year, with over 180 engine-related, averaging $5,000–$6,000 in repair costs. Root causes: piston damage, oil sludge, and connecting rod bearings.
NHTSA recall 21V-622 / SC216 covers Forte YD 2016–2018: the trunk latch can become damaged and prevent opening from the inside, creating an entrapment risk. Dealers replace the trunk latch assembly at no charge.
NHTSA recall 17V-773 covers Forte YD 2014–2016: the plastic brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate, leaving the brake light switch plunger permanently extended. This causes continuous brake light illumination and may allow gear shifting without pressing the brake pedal. Dealers replace the pad at no charge.
