Kia 1.6 GDi
Direct-injection four-cylinder with good power output. Prone to intake valve deposits at high mileage β regular cleaning recommended.
Family van with base engine
135 hp in a seven-seater β enough for the supermarket, not for mountain passes.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) can wear or fail prematurely. If fuel pressure drops, starting behaviour deteriorates severely; on total failure no start is possible.
Symptoms: Long cranking, engine barely starts, engine stalls at low rpm, fault code P0087 (fuel pressure too low)
Direct injection sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber; intake valves are not washed. Oil carbon deposits accumulate, reducing flow and causing misfires and power loss.
Symptoms: Rough idle, hard starting, power loss, sporadic misfires during acceleration, increased fuel consumption
The timing chain can stretch with extended oil change intervals or frequent short trips. A hydraulic tensioner compensates for wear initially; extended intervals accelerate wear considerably.
Symptoms: Rattling or clattering on cold start that subsides after warm-up; engine warning light with cam/crank fault codes
On the G4FD in the Sportage QL, cases have been documented where spark plugs β especially cylinder 4 β foul prematurely through oil ingress. Oil traces were visible on the plugs.
Symptoms: Misfires, rough running especially on one cylinder, engine warning light, bluish exhaust smoke.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The Carens RP's air-con compressor wears out prematurely at higher mileage. Leaking refrigerant lines and defective condensers are further typical weak points of the climate system.
Front-axle wheel bearings on the Carens RP become noisy at higher mileage and need replacement. The issue appeared at around 88,000 km during the Auto Bild long-term test.
The rear brake calipers on the Carens RP tend to seize because the rear brakes are inherently lightly loaded. This leads to uneven pad wear and warped brake discs.
Faulty cable pass-throughs in the doors cause failures of the electric window regulators and central locking. Fuses repeatedly blow.
The front parking sensors on the Carens RP trigger false alarms or beep continuously without any obstacle. During the Auto Bild long-term test the sensors were replaced twice.
Shock absorbers on the Carens RP wear at higher mileage, resulting in uncomfortable ride quality on rough roads. Knocking and cracking over bumps indicates worn top mounts.
Plastic clips and trim panels inside the Carens RP loosen over time. The Auto Bild long-term test found loose clips on the engine bay and underbody cladding.
