Jeep Grand Cherokee
Most-produced FCA/Stellantis engine — used in Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, RAM, Dodge and 20+ models. Rocker arm/lifter tick is subject of a 2022 class action lawsuit. Plastic oil cooler housing leaks at high mileage — worst case mixes oil and coolant ("chocolate foam"). Dorman metal replacement as permanent fix. Change oil every 5,000 miles and react at the first tick: 200k+ miles realistic.
Pentastar 3.6 GC WK2 — watch the rocker tick and oil cooler
290 hp V6 in the Grand Cherokee WK2: the standard engine in millions of FCA vehicles. Check for rocker arm tick from ~40k miles — class action in progress. Inspect oil cooler housing at ~50k miles for leaks. Maintain it and react fast: 200k+ miles realistic.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Plastic oil cooler housing leaks externally or causes oil/coolant mixing ("chocolate milkshake"). Typical from 50k miles. Dorman metal replacement (Dorman 917-114) is the permanent fix — OEM plastic part fails again.
Symptoms: Oil loss, coolant in oil (milky), overheating, oil spots under engine
Early Pentastar cylinder heads (2011-2013) crack from thermal stress. Design flaw in the coolant channel layout — revised head from 2014 onwards. The most expensive Pentastar repair.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating, white smoke, milky oil
Rocker arm needle bearing wears prematurely — roller falls out of its seat, cam lobe gets destroyed. FCA class action lawsuit (2014-2020). "No permanent fix" per lawsuit — dealers replace with identical parts. Go to dealer at the first tick.
Symptoms: Metallic ticking on cold start, misfires, power loss, surging
Oil filter housing gasket leaks — often missed until an oil spot appears on the ground. Cheap repair when caught early.
Symptoms: Oil spot under engine (front), oil smell, dropping oil level
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Air suspension compressor fails — vehicle sags to one side or stays at wrong ride height. Expensive repair: compressor alone $500-1,200, more if air bag also failed.
545RFE/65RFE automatic transmission shifts harshly or erratically — valve body wears, torque converter slips. Especially on 3.6L versions from ~50k miles.
Alternator fails at higher mileage — typical for FCA vehicles of this generation. Battery no longer charges, electrics fail.
Electric liftgate actuator fails — tailgate no longer opens electrically. Typical wear on WK2 from ~50k miles.
Brake rotors warp from heat buildup — typical for heavy SUVs. Can occur as early as ~30k miles from aggressive or frequent braking.
