Plastic timing chain guides are the known Achilles heel from 130,000 km. Oil consumption through piston rings in early units worth monitoring. Camshaft sensors fail regularly — OEM parts only.
QX60 V6 — smooth family hauler, CVT is the gamble
265 hp, smooth-revving VQ V6 — the engine is not the problem. The Jatco CVT below it is. A 2014-2016 QX60 with the 3.5 port-injected V6 is a lottery ticket: some run 200k miles, others shudder to a $6,000 transmission rebuild at 80k. If the CVT is healthy, the VQ will run long after.

Piston rings wear prematurely, leading to significant oil consumption. Dealers have replaced complete engines under warranty. Owners report up to 2 quarts of oil lost per 1,000 miles.
Symptoms: Blue exhaust smoke under acceleration, significant oil level drop, oily exhaust smell
Plastic timing chain guide rails are too brittle by design and break from 130,000 km. Fragments fall into the oil and risk engine damage.
Symptoms: Cold-start rattle disappearing after a few seconds, increasingly loud chain noise at high mileage
Sustained oil starvation from the piston ring issue can cause connecting rod bearing damage. Engine repair including cylinder head replacement costs around €4,000; a replacement engine is €2,500–3,000.
Symptoms: Metallic clattering and knocking from engine, severe power loss, oil pressure warning
The ceramic substrate of the OEM catalysts fractures from oil combustion and thermal shock. Loose fragments block the exhaust path, increase back-pressure and can ultimately cause piston seizure.

The FS6R31A manual gearbox has single-cone synchroniser rings in 2nd and 3rd gear. From around 80,000 km, crunching or clonking noises appear, especially with a cold gearbox. Changing gearbox oil to 75W90 GL4 helps temporarily.
Symptoms: Hard crunching or dull clonk when selecting 2nd/3rd gear, especially cold. Nissan dealers refer to it as 'normal characteristics'.
Valve cover gaskets on both cylinder banks become porous and allow oil to escape. Age-related issue. Inexpensive repair, but address promptly to avoid secondary damage.
Symptoms: Oily smell in engine bay, visible oil traces on valve covers, oil on spark plugs
Camshaft sensors fail regularly from around 100,000 km. OEM sensors only — aftermarket parts fail significantly sooner.

The VQ35DE's multi-point injection system washes the valves in principle, but crankcase ventilation oil mist can still cause deposits. This applies especially on older high-mileage engines.
Symptoms: Slight roughness at idle at high mileage, occasional misfires
The 5-wire wideband lambda sensors of the VQ35DE become sluggish from around 110,000 km. Fault codes P0136/P0156 appear, consumption increases noticeably. OEM sensors recommended.

The VQ35DE throttle bodies carbon up from around 80,000 km. After cleaning, the ECU must relearn idle, otherwise speed stays at 2,500 rpm. Relearn procedure via ignition cycle required.
Symptoms: High idle (2,500 rpm), rough running after cleaning without ECU reset
The standard PCV valve on the VQ35DE routes crankcase gases back into the intake. With elevated crankcase pressure or age-related wear, oil enters the combustion chamber and worsens oil consumption.
Symptoms: Elevated oil consumption without visible external leak, oil film on air filter or throttle body, faint blue smoke under acceleration

The Jatco JF018E CVT is the defining reliability problem of the L50 QX60. Shudder at 15–25 mph under light throttle is the early warning of belt slip. Fault code P17F0 mandates full transmission replacement. The $277M class action settlement (Stringer v. NNA) extended warranty to 96 months/94,000 miles for 2015–2018 models with up to $5,000 reimbursement.
Tempered glass in the panoramic sunroof shatters spontaneously from thermal stress — class action filed against Nissan covering 2009–2020 models. Infiniti attributes failures to 'thermal stress' in tempered glass.
ABS actuator pump allows brake fluid to leak onto internal circuit board. Electrical short creates fire risk. NHTSA recall affects 2017–2019 QX60. Do not drive if ABS warning light is permanently on.
AC system loses cooling capacity from around 75,000 miles through compressor wear or refrigerant loss. Evaporator repairs often require dashboard removal. Repair costs up to $2,800.
