Hyundai Staria
Turbo direct-injection unit for SUVs and compacts. Good power and efficiency combo — feed it quality oil.
People mover, not pace-setter
The Staria looks like a space shuttle and drives like a bus. Acres of room, zero driving involvement.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The G4FT Smartstream timing chain can jump or break at higher mileage if preventive replacement is neglected. The manufacturer recommends inspection before 80,000 miles (130,000 km) to prevent damage.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, check engine light, rough idle — with a jumped chain: engine stop or no-start
As a pure GDI engine without port injection, no fuel washes the intake valves. In hybrid operation, where the combustion engine is frequently switched on and off, carbonisation intensifies.
Symptoms: Stumbling and hesitation on cold start, rough idle below 1,500 rpm, increased fuel consumption, misfires.
The G4FT is the first engine with CVVD (Continuously Variable Valve Duration). The complex actuator system shows isolated failures in early production years that require expensive repair.
Symptoms: Check engine light (CVVD fault codes), reduced power, rough running, power loss in the upper rpm range.
In short-trip-dominated hybrid driving with the G4FT, DPF regeneration cycles are initiated frequently. Fuel injected for regeneration enters the engine oil and dilutes it.
Symptoms: Rising oil level, petrol smell in oil, elevated engine temperature from thinned oil, oil pressure warning.
On some G4FT engines oil leaks from the turbocharger shaft and enters the intercooler. Oil mist then deposits in the intake tract and can cause power losses.
Symptoms: Oil in the intercooler hose, light blue smoke under load, oil consumption, turbo whine.
Hyundai released a semi-official software update (TSB) for the Tucson Hybrid to reduce fuel dilution of the engine oil. Particularly affected are short-trip drivers in hybrid mode with frequent engine starts.
Symptoms: Oil level rises above maximum, petrol smell in engine oil, oil visually thinner than normal; engine wear with long oil change intervals
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The sliding door handles on the Staria US4 show bubbling and can break prematurely. The defect is not isolated and is normally resolved under warranty. Repair work can leave paint damage on the fender.
The front camera on the Staria US4 repeatedly causes massive electrical problems up to complete vehicle failure. Driver assistance systems fail and can put the vehicle into limp mode.
Early Staria US4 models show instability in the infotainment system. USB connections and Apple CarPlay disconnect and cannot be permanently resolved even after multiple dealer visits.
On some Staria US4 models the B-pillar vibrates noticeably at around 60 km/h on uneven roads. Body stiffness of the van concept is structurally limited.
The Staria US4 diesel shows, like van-type commercial vehicles, comparatively poor engine noise isolation. Interior is louder than competing passenger cars of the same class.
The electric window regulators on the rear doors of the Staria US4 fail after 70,000–90,000 km. Motor or regulator fails; windows can no longer be adjusted. Panoramic windows in the second row can shatter from sliding door impact.
The 8-speed automatic transmission tends to hunt on gradients: it selects too high a gear uphill, and makes little use of engine braking downhill. The high vehicle weight makes the problem noticeably worse.
