Hyundai Santa Fe
Bigger Sirius NA with more low-end torque. Solid engineering for larger sedans and SUVs.
Early SUV, honest worker
Classic early-2000s family SUV territory. Robust, practical, about as sporty as a fridge.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The 2.4L Sirius G4JP is an interference engine. Timing belt change every 90,000 km is mandatory. Many older vehicles have unknown change history — elevated risk.
Symptoms: Sudden engine failure; no restart; no compression; possible metallic noise.
The Delta V6 engine tends to oil leaks at valve cover gaskets and camshaft seals at high mileage. Disassembly is labour-intensive.
Symptoms: Oil stains under the vehicle, oil smell, dropping oil level.
The 2.4L Sirius develops increased oil consumption from around 130,000 km. A sticking oil control ring segment is frequently cited as the cause — favoured by extended change intervals.
Symptoms: Oil consumption 1 L per 2,000 km; blue smoke on acceleration; oil level often below minimum.
The belt-driven water pump in the G4JP shows shaft seal leakage that is not always immediately visible. Slow coolant loss from the seep leads to overheating damage.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops slowly; no visible puddle; coolant smell after driving.
Rear timing cover seals and crankshaft shaft seals on the G4JP weep at high mileage. Oil film on the belt significantly shortens timing belt life.
Symptoms: Oil drops; oil film visible on timing belt; smoke from engine bay after driving.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
The variable geometry turbo (VGT) on the 2.0 CRDi SM seizes due to deposits. The variable vanes block and cause power loss, poor cold starts and increased fuel consumption.
The rear trailing arms on the SM suffer from severe corrosion in salt-road areas up to structural failure. The vehicle then becomes unroadworthy and is a typical reason for inspection failure.
Petrol engines in the Santa Fe SM (2.4 and 2.7 V6) use a timing belt with a recommended replacement interval. Missing the service causes belt failure and engine damage.
The front axle on the Santa Fe SM is a known weak point. Ball joints fail prematurely and driveshaft boots tear, accelerating grease loss and joint wear.
The clutch on the SM is undersized for the vehicle weight and wears quickly, especially when towing. Stiff gear selection when the clutch is warm is an early warning sign.
The first generation suffers from premature wear of front axle joints and steering linkage. The pitman arm can come loose; on AWD models symptoms appear earlier due to greater weight.
