Hyundai Kona
Turbo hybrid engine with strong combined output. Efficient and punchy, but the complex drivetrain needs specialist hands.
Modern crossover, plays it safe
The new Kona SX2 is well-built and modern, but base spec stays firmly in sensible daily-driver territory.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The Kappa 1.6 T-GDi in the i20 N, like all Hyundai T-GDi engines, tends toward fuel entry into the oil. Maximum recommended oil change interval: 5,000 km; oil analysis recommended after purchasing a used example.
Symptoms: Petrol smell in the oil, dropping oil level, light knock after prolonged urban use.
Timing chain stretch on the G4FT can occur before 80,000 km. The chain can jump and cause complete engine failure with piston-to-valve contact.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start; timing chain fault code in memory; in extreme cases engine stop.
High thermal load during spirited driving intensifies carbon buildup on intake valves. Short oil change intervals and occasional cleaning extend engine life.
Symptoms: Power loss, idle hunting, misfires (P030x), reduced gas exchange.
The G4FT hybrid engine often runs at low temperatures and for short durations in hybrid mode β ideal conditions for valve carbonisation with GDI and no port injection. Tucson owner reports confirm this.
Symptoms: Hesitation when cold; power drop; fault codes P030x misfires; increased fuel consumption.
Reports document 'Hybrid system failure' messages during motorway driving on the G4FT. Fuel injection faults and EMS errors were identified as the cause. Dealer replacement required.
Symptoms: Hybrid drivetrain warning light; power loss; vehicle runs in limp mode only; no regenerative braking.
The G4FT has no automatic valve lash compensation β valve clearance must be checked manually. Power loss can occur from 40,000 km if adjustment is neglected.
Symptoms: Power loss; rough engine noise; slightly rough running; increased fuel consumption.
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
A software fault in the dual-clutch gearbox transmission control unit can trigger unexpected strong vehicle deceleration. KBA recall affects approx. 10,575 vehicles worldwide, recall code 41D037.
A short circuit in the battery wiring in the fuse box can cause a fire. Recall code 41D009 affects approx. 4,471 vehicles in Germany (combustion engine models). Dealer installs cable protection.
The mild hybrid variant (48V) shows reduced throttle response after extended motorway driving. No fault codes stored. Cause unclear, possibly thermal throttling of the electric motor.
The 8-speed automatic gearbox on the Kona SX2 shows irregular shifting, judder at low revs and metal debris in gearbox oil. Parts lead times at dealers are long as replacements are hard to source.
BlueLink connectivity service requires regular resets; infotainment shows glitches during navigation updates. Usually fixable by software updates at the dealer.
The exhaust system on the Kona SX2 shows above-average corrosion from just 3β5 years. Defect rate above class average according to data, especially on short-distance vehicles.
BlueLink connectivity problems and infotainment crashes are known weak points on early-production Kona SX2. Software update at dealer usually resolves symptoms permanently.
Early 2023 model year examples show crashes and sluggish response times in the 12.3-inch infotainment system as well as connection dropouts with wireless smartphone mirroring. Software updates from 2024 noticeably improve the situation.
