Hyundai Ioniq

EM10 Permanentmagnet-Synchronmotor 120 hp Automatic Hatchback 2016–2019
– Be Careful
Engine EM10 – Be Careful 6,170–26,780 €

Permanent-magnet synchronous motor, high efficiency. Barely needs maintenance; battery capacity is the range bottleneck.

Fun Factor? Decent

Efficiency machine, passion-free

The Ioniq AE exists to maximize efficiency. Quiet, frugal, highway-capable — fun is not part of the equation.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Electric motor bearing wear from electrical current

Stray current through the electric motor bearings can cause electrochemical erosion (fluting). Affected Ioniq motors develop a hum and eventually fail. Hyundai has provided a repair procedure.

Symptoms: Humming or droning from the drivetrain area that increases with speed, occasional vibration in the pedal area.

1,500–5,000 € from 80,000 km
!! 12V battery discharge

The 12V auxiliary battery of the Ioniq Electric discharges due to parasitic drain (Bluelink apps, gateway control units). After short periods of standing the vehicle can no longer be opened or started.

Symptoms: Vehicle can no longer be opened by door handle, unable to start, all electrical functions dead, jump-start required.

80–250 € from 60,000 km
!! Traction battery capacity loss from DC fast charging

Daily DC fast charging significantly accelerates battery degradation in the Ioniq Electric. Users with intensive CCS charging report capacity losses of approximately 10% after 150,000 km.

Symptoms: Noticeably shorter range, SoH below 90%, charging speed drops in the upper charge range.

3,000–8,000 € from 150,000 km
!! 12V battery drains unexpectedly

The most well-known issue with the Ioniq Electric: a control unit fails to enter standby and drains the 12V auxiliary battery overnight. Causes can include a defective door contact, a hung multimedia system or BlueLink server problems.

Symptoms: Vehicle won't start in the morning, error messages after restart, system reset required

100–300 € from 50,000 km
! BMS state-of-health display inaccurate

The battery management system of the Ioniq Electric does not always display the state of health (SoH) correctly. A software update or complete charge/discharge cycles can restore calibration.

Symptoms: Range display fluctuates heavily, SoH reading below 90% even though actual capacity is higher, OBD readout deviates from reality.

0–200 € from 80,000 km
! Charge port lock jams

The small electric motor of the Ioniq Electric's charge port lock frequently jams and prevents charging. Affected vehicles cannot be charged, and sometimes the connector remains locked in.

Symptoms: Charging not possible, connector cannot be inserted or removed, error message

150–500 € from 60,000 km
! Brake disc corrosion from regenerative braking

Due to heavy use of regenerative braking, the rear brake discs of the Ioniq are barely used mechanically and rust quickly. Even with moderate driving, rust forms and leads to noise.

Symptoms: Grinding noise when braking, vibrations, brake disc visibly heavily corroded

150–400 € from 40,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 10

!! Electronics 12V battery drains: control unit does not enter standby

A control unit (often the multimedia or BlueLink module) does not enter standby mode and fully discharges the 12V battery. The vehicle then won't start even with a full HV battery.

150–350 € from 60,000 km
!! Electronics High-voltage battery — cell defects and short circuit

Some Ioniq AE EV models show internal high-voltage battery cell defects with short-circuit risk. Hyundai initially limited charging capacity to 90%; affected vehicles received replacement batteries.

0–8,000 € from 50,000 km
!! Other Recall: regenerative braking can fail

Hyundai recalled Ioniq EV models because faulty regenerative braking can cause braking dropouts. A software bug in the brake software causes the regenerative brake to disengage under certain conditions.

0–0 €
!! Electronics Charge port lock blocked: plug cannot be released

The charge port lock actuator fails and traps the charging plug in the vehicle. Usually resolvable via the manual emergency release lever, but the actuator then needs replacement.

100–350 € from 80,000 km
!! Electronics Hybrid system warning due to communication fault

Communication faults between the petrol and electric motor trigger the 'Check hybrid system' warning. Vehicle loses hybrid function and judders; the affected control unit often needs replacement.

500–2,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Electronics Charging plug lock jams or blocks

The charging plug lock on the Ioniq AE sticks; the plug cannot be released. Problem mainly affects pre-facelift models up to 2019. Mechanical emergency release via wheel arch as workaround.

150–500 € from 60,000 km
!! Electronics 12-volt auxiliary battery drains while parked

A control unit fails to enter standby mode and drains the 12-volt battery overnight. Causes include faulty door contact switches, hung multimedia systems or BlueLink server connections.

80–300 € from 40,000 km
! Brakes Rear brake discs: rust and grooving due to regenerative braking

Because regenerative braking rarely activates the wheel brakes, the rear brake discs rust and develop grooves. Inspection engineers regularly flag this on the Ioniq AE.

150–350 € from 60,000 km
! Interior Boot roller blind breaks

The boot roller blind on the Ioniq AE breaks out of its holder or tears when pulled. Poor material choice at the roller bracket; replacement part cheaply available.

50–200 € from 60,000 km
i Interior Door seals squeak in wet conditions

Door seals produce squeaking noises in wet weather or frost. The problem is widespread and usually resolves after lubricating the seals.

10–80 € from 50,000 km
