Bread-and-butter turbodiesel with decent grunt. Proven unit, though the dual-mass flywheel and DPF are the usual wear items.
Grown-up compact, no drama
The i30 GD is comfortable and composed. Not track-ready, but solid and surprisingly nimble for a family hatch.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The EGR cooler can develop internal leaks and route coolant into the intake tract. Engine damage from coolant combustion and overheating is a real risk.
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, falling coolant level without visible external leaks, engine overheating.
The VGT turbocharger on the D4FB is prone to early failure, sometimes as early as 30,000 km. Before failure oil consumption rises to up to 400 g/1,000 km. Vacuum lines corrode and the VTG actuator seizes.
Symptoms: Whistling noises even at low mileage, power loss, heavy oil consumption, blue exhaust cloud on acceleration.
The upper timing chain stretches from approximately 120,000โ150,000 km, audible as rattling on cold start. If ignored, chain skip or breakage with engine damage threatens.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling immediately after cold start that subsides once the engine reaches operating temperature. Check engine light for camshaft phase error.
EGR valve and intake manifold with swirl flaps coke up heavily during short-trip use. The swirl flaps break in advanced cases and can be sucked into the engine.
Symptoms: Sooty exhaust clouds, power loss, check engine light, idle oscillation, engine in limp mode.
Frequent short trips prevent complete DPF regeneration. Filter clogs and engine enters limp mode. Replacement is expensive; filter cleaning possible if caught early.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, noticeable power loss, engine limp mode, increased fuel consumption.
Delphi injectors in the D4FB can lose their individual coding after approximately 8 million injection cycles. Without re-coding on a test bench the engine runs rough and knocks.
Symptoms: Engine running becomes rough after extended operation, knocking, power loss with no clear fault code.
Vehicle Weaknesses 11
Vehicles produced between October 2013 and June 2014 were recalled due to a power steering fault. Affected vehicles should check the recall status.
The manual gearbox on the i30 GD loses oil through defective shaft seals (lip seals). A typical problem that worsens gradually and can lead to gearbox damage.
A characteristic cracking noise in 4th gear on the manual gearbox is caused by defective synchroniser rings. The problem occurs more frequently at higher mileages.
Brakes are a classic weak point on the i30 GD: discs and pads wear quickly, parking brake regularly flagged at inspection. Typical from the second inspection onwards.
Tie rod ends on the i30 GD wear out more often than average according to inspection reports, compromising steering precision. A mandatory check point on used car inspections.
Like the predecessor FD, the tailgate shows rust tendency at the lower edge. Check carefully on examples over 8 years old.
ADAC breakdown statistics show elevated battery failure rates for the i30 GD. Older examples and short-distance drivers are mainly affected. Spark plug problems are also reported.
Rear lighting is flagged above average at inspection on the i30 GD. Rear bulbs and indicators fail; contact and wiring problems in the rear area are known.
Foot brake and parking brake frequently fail to meet inspection standards on the i30 GD. Worn brake discs regularly cause the vehicle to fail the roadworthiness test.
