Hyundai i20

D4FC 1.4L CRDi 90 hp Manual Hatchback 2012–2014 Custom Search
– Be Careful
Engine D4FC – Be Careful 2,920–8,470 $

Compact turbodiesel for superminis and hatches. Good low-down shove, but injectors can get tired with age.

Fun Factor? Decent

Dependable daily, zero thrills

The i20 PB handles well enough but has zero emotional content. Solid, not stirring.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing chain stretch at high mileage

The D4FC timing chain stretches from approximately 120,000 km and can skip teeth, causing valve damage. Dirty oil accelerates wear considerably.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, check engine light, power loss, in worst case sudden engine stop.

880–1,760 $ from 130,000 km
!! Injector seal blow-by clogs oil circuit

Defective copper sealing washers on the injectors allow combustion gases into the oil circuit. Coked-up oil blocks the oil strainer and turbo oil gallery, leading to turbo damage.

Symptoms: Blue smoke, rising oil level (diesel contamination), turbo noise, power loss.

170–660 $ from 100,000 km
!! Turbo failure from oil starvation after blocked oil strainer

Carbon residue from injector seal blow-by blocks the oil strainer. The turbo receives insufficient oil and seizes — follow-on costs often exceed the vehicle's value.

Symptoms: Whistling turbo noise, blue exhaust clouds, sudden power loss, oil pressure warning.

880–2,750 $ from 150,000 km
!! DPF clogging on short trips

D4FC in short-trip use is prone to DPF clogging because regeneration temperature is never reached. Occasional motorway runs are essential for filter health.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, engine limp mode, severe power loss, increased fuel consumption.

880–2,750 $ from 100,000 km
!! EGR valve coked up causing rough running

The EGR valve on the D4FC is prone to heavy carbon fouling, especially during short-trip operation. A stuck EGR valve causes rough idle and power loss in the lower RPM range.

Symptoms: Hesitation on pull-away, rough idle, increased consumption, occasional check engine light (P0401/P0403).

110–550 $ from 80,000 km
