Hyundai Grandeur

G4KC 2.4L (Theta) 164 hp Automatic Sedan 2005–2010
βœ– Stay Away!
Engine G4KC βœ– Stay Away! 8,850–33,600 €

Theta NA with enough power for full-size sedans. Chain-driven, low running costs.

Fun Factor? Decent

Luxury liner, no pace

The Grandeur TG is built for wafting, not hustling. Premium comfort over everything else.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Oil sludge blocks connecting rod bearing galleries

Identical problem to the 2.0 Theta: metal swarf from manufacturing or sludge formation blocks oil galleries to the connecting rod bearings. This Theta defect cost Hyundai billions in recalls.

Symptoms: Metallic knock (rod knock), oil pressure warning, sudden engine stop, metallic particles in oil.

2,000–8,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Timing chain stretches β€” rattle and timing drift

The G4KC timing chain drive is designed for the full engine life, but in practice stretches with extended oil change intervals. A stretched chain can shift valve timing and provoke valve damage.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, check engine light (cam phase fault), power loss, occasional misfires.

600–2,000 € from 140,000 km
!! Timing chain stretch (early phase)

Early G4KC production showed problems with stretching timing chains that rattled and could jump. Particularly a risk with poor maintenance and extended oil change intervals.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, engine noise on cranking, misfires from incorrect timing

500–1,500 € from 120,000 km
!! F4A42 automatic gearbox failure

The Mitsubishi F4A42 automatic gearbox paired with the G4KC is a known weak point. Failures have been reported at under 40,000 km; repair or replacement costs €2,500–3,000.

Symptoms: Harsh shift shocks, gearbox stops shifting, vehicle only moves forwards or not at all

1,500–3,000 € from 80,000 km
!! CVVT camshaft phaser failure

The CVVT phaser on the 2.4 MPI tends to stick or seize with delayed oil changes. Repair costs are manageable when caught early.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, check engine light, occasional idle instability.

350–900 € from 100,000 km
!! Piston rings stick β€” oil consumption from 100,000 km

Theta piston rings tend to stick in their grooves. This mechanism causes oil bypass into the combustion chamber, typically starting gradually from 100,000 km.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level, light blue smoke during warm-up, oil consumption >0.5 L/1,000 km, check engine light (lambda sensor).

800–3,000 € from 100,000 km
! Valve clearance adjustment β€” bucket tappets

The G4KC Theta uses shimless bucket tappets without hydraulic compensation. Without valve clearance inspection every 100,000 km engine noise increases; with clearance below spec, hot valves are at risk.

Symptoms: Ticking from the cylinder head, louder when cold, increasing engine noise over time

150–500 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 11

!! Other Recall: ABS circuit board fire risk from short circuit in wet conditions

A recall was issued for the Grandeur TG due to a manufacturing defect in the ABS circuit board. When exposed to water, short circuits can occur creating a fire risk.

0–0 € from 60,000 km
!! Gearbox Transmission damage β€” F5A51 automatic

The F5A51 automatic transmission in the Grandeur TG shows elevated failure rates. Metallic noises from the gearbox housing, sensor failures, and limp mode are typical. Repairs are expensive; valve body work alone costs around €900.

900–4,000 € from 150,000 km
!! Gearbox Automatic gearbox unreliable

Automatic gearbox on the Grandeur TG is considered disproportionately failure-prone. Transmission electronics (input/output sensors) fail and switch to limp mode. Vehicles with little short-trip use and regular oil changes last longer.

600–4,000 € from 150,000 km
!! Gearbox Automatic gearbox: reverse gear fails from shifter linkage

The Grandeur TG shows problems with reverse gear on the automatic due to shifter linkage misalignment. Gearbox oil leaks at the front pump seal and cover are also reported.

300–2,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Other Recall: driver seat adjustment switch does not work while driving

A recall for the TG Grandeur concerned the driver's seat adjustment switches, which failed while driving and distracted the driver. Affected vehicles from March to August 2007.

0–0 €
!! Suspension Driveshaft wear at high mileages

On the Grandeur TG, driveshafts wear at higher mileages. After a driveshaft replacement, metallic noises from the transmission can occur, indicating secondary damage.

300–900 € from 125,000 km
!! Brakes Incorrectly dimensioned replacement brake discs

During Grandeur TG brake repairs, incorrectly dimensioned discs are often fitted (256 mm instead of the original 303 mm). Wrong discs lead to reduced braking performance and safety issues.

200–500 €
! Electronics Instrument cluster: fuel gauge and illumination sporadically faulty

On the Grandeur TG, the instrument cluster shows sporadic failures: fuel level indicator, warning lights, and illumination can fail intermittently. Cause often moisture or contact faults.

100–800 € from 100,000 km
! Electronics Faulty electric rear blind

The electric rear blind of the Grandeur TG exhibits mechanical faults and jams regularly. Drive motors and guide rails wear out, preventing the blind from fully opening or closing.

150–500 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Electrics and steering control faulty

Electrical systems and electromechanical steering show disproportionate failure rates according to damage statistics. Steering responds with fault messages or delayed feedback. Special Hyundai software often required for diagnosis.

300–1,500 € from 100,000 km
i Interior Rear window sun blind faulty

Electric rear blind is a widespread weakness and fails on most examples with increasing age. Drive or mechanism jams.

100–500 € from 80,000 km
