Alpha II engine with timing belt drive. Interval every 60,000 km. Belt failure causes total engine damage on this interference engine. Older vehicles often have an overdue belt.
Symptoms: No direct warning symptom. Squealing possible just before failure; then immediate engine damage.
In the G4EE the head gasket can fail at higher mileage, preferentially after overheating events. Repair costs are often uneconomical relative to the vehicle's value.
Symptoms: Whitish smoke from the exhaust, coolant loss with no visible leak, mayonnaise-like emulsion on the dipstick
G4EE Alpha engines develop hardening valve stem seals from around 120,000 km that allow oil into the combustion chambers. Typical symptom is blue smoke on cold start. Repair is economically worthwhile at this mileage.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, increased oil consumption, fouled spark plugs
The G4EE in the Getz uses a belt-driven water pump whose failure causes immediate overheating. Preventive replacement at the timing belt change is mandatory: approx. €400 preventive cost vs. potentially €3,000 for engine damage from overheating.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature rises, whining or squealing from the belt area
In the G4EE (Getz 1.4) deposits on the throttle body cause idle problems and occasional stalling from around 80,000 km. Cleaning followed by a throttle body relearn typically resolves the problem permanently.
Symptoms: Rough idle, engine stalls when stationary, sluggish throttle response
The G4EE Alpha II hydraulic valve lifters wear rapidly when oil changes are not maintained. Loud tapping after cold start is the first sign. Poor oil quality significantly accelerates the process.
Symptoms: Metallic tapping from the valvetrain shortly after cold start, usually inaudible once at operating temperature
The lambda sensor is a known wear item on the G4EE 1.4 Alpha II. Failures lead to increased fuel consumption, a rich mixture and emissions problems at the MOT.
Symptoms: Check engine light, increased fuel consumption, rough engine running, black soot at the tailpipe
