Hyundai Galloper
Mitsubishi-derived V6 with proven internals. Tough, but thirsty, and age-related wear items add up.
Built tough, not built fast
The Galloper is Mitsubishi underneath and built for mud, not speed. Tough as nails, refined as sandpaper.
Engine Weaknesses 7
The G6AT is an interference engine with a timing belt (no chain). A belt failure after an overdue service interval immediately causes total engine destruction through valve collision. Belt change every 60,000 km recommended.
Symptoms: Sudden engine stop, loud bang, no restart possible β in extreme cases engine noise before the belt breaks.
This older Sigma V6 shows elevated oil consumption at high mileages through worn piston rings and valve stem seals. The engine is fundamentally robust with proper maintenance.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on startup and after standstill, dropping oil level, slight oil smell.
At higher mileages the valve stem seals in the G6AT V6 harden and degrade. Oil consumption from combustion in the chambers is most noticeable immediately after cold start.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, elevated oil consumption, soot deposits on exhaust, occasional stumble.
The G6AT water pump sits behind the timing belt and must be replaced at every belt change. Skipping the pump replacement leads to pump failure shortly after the belt service β doubling the cost.
Symptoms: Overheating after timing belt replacement, coolant seeping from behind the belt cover, persistent coolant temperature warning.
Like other Lambda V6 engines, the G6AT tends toward elevated oil consumption from sticking piston rings at higher mileages. Primarily affects poorly maintained vehicles with overly extended oil change intervals.
Symptoms: Oil consumption above 0.5 L/1,000 km, blue smoke under acceleration, dropping oil level
The G6AT 3.0 V6 is prone to premature spark plug wear and occasional ignition coil failures, manifesting as misfires on individual cylinders. Replacement with platinum or iridium plugs only is recommended.
Symptoms: Misfires, rough running, check engine light (misfire codes), power loss
The G6AT uses solid bucket tappets with no hydraulic compensation. Valve clearance must be set regularly with shims; otherwise increased engine noise and ultimately valve damage will result.
Symptoms: Ticking from the valvetrain, especially when cold, increasing engine noise
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
Ladder frame rusts especially in hard-to-reach profiles. Wheel arches behind plastic cladding and sills often hide massive cavity rust. Windscreen frame undermined at the lower corners. Factory corrosion protection is very poor.
Leaf-sprung variants with manual gearbox are considered not motorway-capable. Sustained driving above 100 km/h at high rpm damages the gearbox. 4th and 5th gears are particularly susceptible.
Brake caliper seals harden after 8β10 years, causing seized pistons. Calipers seized on one side cause uneven pad wear and brake pull.
Electric windows, airbag control units, and ABS sensors fail with increasing age. Moisture ingress into connectors and relays through inadequate seals causes hard-to-diagnose faults.
