Hyundai Elantra
Updated naturally aspirated 2.0L with Smartstream tech. Efficient via variable valve timing and friction optimization. Solid base powertrain without turbo complexity, but less punch than the 1.6 T-GDI.
Smartstream base for thrifty drivers
The 2.0 Smartstream in the Elantra CN7 base delivers 147 hp via IVT. Efficient and quiet, but the IVT character strips out any sportiness.

A batch of piston oil rings was heat-treated inconsistently, causing cylinder bore scoring, high oil use and knocking. Hyundai is rolling out a Piston-ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software update; failed engines are replaced under recall 21V301.
Symptoms: Metallic knocking, oil-pressure warning light, loss of power, hesitation under acceleration, burning-oil smell or bluish smoke. Complete failure leads to sudden engine stall.
The G4NL's close-coupled catalyst can disintegrate when the engine misfires or burns oil. Ceramic dust gets pulled back into the combustion chambers and scores the cylinder walls, often compounding the piston-ring issue.
Symptoms: P0420 trouble code, rattling noise from the exhaust, loss of power, and later engine knocking as ceramic particles enter the combustion chambers.
The G4NL timing chain shows stretch and tensioner issues from around 95k miles. A brief cold-start rattle is the classic warning sign before the chain eventually jumps a tooth.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling noise on cold start that fades after a few seconds. Advanced wear causes continuous rattle, power loss and a check-engine light with cam correlation codes.
Some G4NL engines burn more than a quart per 1,000 miles. Common causes are CVVT malfunctions, worn valve stem seals or prematurely worn piston rings.
Symptoms: Frequent top-ups between services, bluish smoke on cold start or after engine braking, low-oil warning on the dash.
The Smartstream engine uses a new variable-displacement oil pump. Control-valve faults show up in some units, causing low idle oil pressure or sustained high pressure that stresses bearings and VVT actuators.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning at idle, rattling from the top end of the engine, fault codes related to the oil pressure control solenoid.
The Smartstream engine's electronic Thermal Management Module occasionally fails before 60k miles, typically triggering a P0128 code for coolant temperature below regulating threshold.
Symptoms: Check-engine light with P0128, weak cabin heat in winter, coolant temperature gauge stays low, higher cold-run fuel consumption.

MDPS shuts off without warning around 2,000 mi on 2021 SEL/Limited; manual steering required, paired with multiple warning lights. CarComplaints: 5 NHTSA steering complaints, often warranty-replaced rack/motor.
Hyundai Recall 21V-937 covers brake master cylinders produced with sharp edges on an internal component that can damage the seal, allowing fluid bypass and reduced braking. Dealer inspects and replaces master cylinder + reservoir assembly free of charge.
Hyundai recalled 2021-2023 Elantra (and Accent) for front seatbelt pretensioners with microfractures in the gas-generator delivery pipe — the pretensioner can launch metal fragments into the cabin during a crash. ~240,000 vehicles total.
Smartstream IVT exhibits shudder, surge, slipping and droning, often before 30,000 km. Hyundai TSB 20-01-047H reflashes the TCU; persistent cases get a complete IVT replacement under 10y/100k powertrain warranty.
Owners report all dash warning lights (ABS, EPS, ESC, driver-assist) illuminating around 4,000 mi, often after a single sensor or BCM fault cascades. CarComplaints: 27 NHTSA electrical complaints for 2021 alone (top complaint category).
Sauder Schelkopf is investigating a class action covering 2018-2022 Hyundai Elantra (plus Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade) for premature A/C compressor failure with refrigerant leaks, noise and warm-air output.
