Hyundai Bayon
Evolved Kappa unit with better efficiency numbers. CVVT and low consumption — nothing exciting, nothing wrong.
Crossover cosplay, no ambitions
The Bayon is a city crossover that ticks practical boxes. Dynamic ambitions? None whatsoever.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The Kappa timing chain can stretch from around 100,000 km. Occasional cold-start rattling has been reported. Regular oil changes are essential.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start that fades after warm-up; check engine light possible.
This small Kappa unit shows isolated coolant loss through a leaking water pump. Chain and water pump should be replaced together.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops with no visible external leak; temperature gauge slightly elevated.
Kappa 1.2 naturally aspirated engine (newer generation) with a timing chain. Tensioner and guide rails can wear with extended service intervals.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, fading after warm-up.
The G4LF start-stop system shows occasional malfunctions, particularly with ageing batteries.
Symptoms: Engine restarts with a delay or not at all after a stop phase; warning light on the instrument cluster.
Some Kappa 1.2 engines show slightly elevated oil consumption from 80,000 km due to piston ring wear. Not a dramatic finding, but regular checks are necessary.
Symptoms: Oil level drops more than expected between service intervals; no visible smoke.
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
Faulty front camera can disrupt the vehicle's CAN bus and cause all sensors and driver assist systems to fail simultaneously. Vehicle no longer starts, keyless entry does not work.
The Bayon BC3's front camera repeatedly causes severe electrical faults, up to complete vehicle failure. Driver assistance systems fail repeatedly, sometimes multiple incidents per vehicle within a short period.
Transmission control unit software can cause unexpected vehicle deceleration. An eCall recall also affects the emergency call system simultaneously. Recall code 41DT05, approx. 1,530 vehicles in Germany.
Front brake discs show above-average wear. First signs such as squealing or vibrations when braking appear from around 25,000 km. Possibly caused by brake force distribution tuning.
The Bayon BC3's electric power steering can become stiff at low speeds or produce unusual noises. Symptoms often appear after 50,000 km and may indicate a defective EPS control unit.
Front camera triggers CAN bus interference that simultaneously disables all vehicle assists and sensors. 3–4 incidents in a few months documented on individual vehicles.
Clear coat on the steering wheel detaches at exposed spots after around one year or 20,000 km. Hyundai does not always treat this as a warranty case.
The Bayon BC3's start-stop system often works only briefly after a battery replacement. AGM batteries discharge quickly, especially on short trips. Battery replacement frequently occurs within the warranty period.
EPS system shows typical symptoms at low speeds: heavy steering and unusual noises when turning. Manifests frequently after 50,000 km.
Parking sensors fail after 20,000–40,000 km, often due to sensor failures or incorrect calibrations. Typical early-production issue.
