Engine G6DG ✖ Stay Away! 17,030–40,980 $

Updated V6 with direct injection and timing chain. Smooth with decent power, typical for upper midsize sedans. Long-term reliability solid with proper maintenance, injection system occasionally needs cleaning.

Fun Factor? Decent

V6 sedan with premium ambitions

The 3.3 GDI Lambda II in the Azera HG makes 296 hp smoothly. Slick automatic, but keep the head-bolt and rod-bearing issues in mind.

Engine Weaknesses 8

!! Rod bearing failure / catastrophic engine failure

The 3.3 GDI Lambda II has documented rod bearing failures, linked to machining debris in oil passages and marginal bearing lubrication. Subject of 2024 NHTSA petition and ongoing class actions. Santa Fe 2013-2019 received a 15-year/150,000-mile extended warranty — Azera, Cadenza and Sorento did NOT.

Symptoms: Metallic knocking/rod knock that grows with rpm, sometimes brief oil pressure warning light before total failure, often sudden engine seizure while driving without warning.

6,600–14,300 $ from 120,000 km
!! Head bolts stretch / pull out of block

Well-documented Lambda II issue: head bolts stretch or strip threads out of the aluminum block. Often misdiagnosed as a blown head gasket. Cause is believed to be excessive factory torque specification combined with thermal expansion mismatch between steel bolts and aluminum block.

Symptoms: Coolant loss with no visible leak, white exhaust steam, overheating, oil in coolant or vice versa. Often starts with occasional overheating, later bubbles in the coolant reservoir.

3,850–9,900 $ from 140,000 km
!! Crankshaft pin surface defect (NHTSA 17V578)

NHTSA recall 17V578 for 2017 Santa Fe 3.3 GDI built between Jan 26 and Feb 13, 2017. Surface irregularities on the crank pin caused premature bearing wear. About 420 vehicles affected, engine replaced free of charge if diagnosis confirms.

Symptoms: Metallic engine knock, reduced power, possible stall. Only a small production batch is affected — a VIN check at a Hyundai dealer is the only way to verify.

0–0 $ from 30,000 km
!! Intake valve carbon buildup (GDI inherent)

With direct injection no fuel washes the intake valves, so PCV oil mist forms hard carbon deposits. Worse on short trips. Remedy is walnut blasting roughly every 60-70k miles. CRC GDI intake valve cleaner only mitigates.

Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle, misfires, check engine light with misfire codes, elevated fuel consumption, rough cold start.

550–1,320 $ from 100,000 km
!! Oil consumption at higher mileage

Above roughly 90,000 miles the thin CAFE-optimized piston rings get clogged with carbon and lose their seal to the combustion chamber. Typical GDI wear pattern. Usually only fixed by short block replacement.

Symptoms: Oil consumption over 1 quart per 1,000 miles, bluish smoke on acceleration or deceleration, oil level drops noticeably between services, fouled spark plugs.

4,400–9,900 $ from 150,000 km
!! Timing chain rattle on cold start

The hydraulic chain tensioner (usually left bank) bleeds down after the car sits, so the chain slaps briefly at startup. A dealer tech estimated roughly 20% of 3.3 GDI engines are affected. From 2019 the oil filter was moved to the underside to reduce drainback.

Symptoms: Brief rattle/clatter for the first 1-3 seconds after a cold start, disappears once oil pressure builds. Gradually worsens, eventually audible even when warm.

1,320–3,080 $ from 130,000 km
! KSDS knock sensor software (required for warranty)

The Knock Sensor Detection System is a free software update that uses the knock sensor to detect early bearing damage and puts the engine in limp mode. Without this update Hyundai denies the extended 15yr/150k warranty on 2013-2019 Santa Fe.

Symptoms: After the update, a malfunction indicator with a knock-warning message and reduced power may appear. This is intentional — the system warns of an impending bearing failure.

0–330 $ from 80,000 km
! Individual ignition coil failure

Over time individual coils fail. On this V6 the rear three coils sit under the intake manifold, so access is awkward. Coils can be replaced individually but many shops recommend doing the full set at high mileage.

Symptoms: Engine stumble, misfires (CEL codes P0301-P0306), rough idle, power loss, higher fuel consumption, fuel smell from exhaust.

90–500 $ from 110,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

! HVAC A/C weak cooling / refrigerant loss

A/C cools noticeably weaker than comparable cars after 1-2 years. Topping off refrigerant only helps temporarily. Slow leak, often hard to locate.

170–990 $ from 80,000 km
i Other Heavy exhaust soot buildup (GDI typical)

3.3L GDI Lambda II engine produces heavy black soot at the tailpipe that drips onto the bumper. Dealers call it normal for GDI direct injection. Cosmetic, but points to rich combustion.

0–0 $ from 30,000 km
i Electronics Bluetooth connection drops / phone pairing unstable

Bluetooth module regularly loses phone connection, re-pairing required. Dealer software updates help partially, problem often returns.

0–330 $ from 50,000 km
i Body Sunroof squeaks / hood latch rattle

Panoramic sunroof squeaks over bumps. On some cars hood latch also rattles. Known quality issue of the HG generation.

60–330 $ from 60,000 km
