The G4HG crankshaft sprocket can work loose or crack, especially on early production up to around 2007. A loose retaining nut causes vibrations that initiate crankshaft damage.
Symptoms: Progressive power loss, metallic impacts from the engine, sudden engine stop
The hydraulic chain tensioner of the 1.1 L Epsilon loses function when oil change intervals are exceeded. Rattling on cold start is the typical symptom; acting early prevents engine damage.
Symptoms: Rattling directly after cold start for 5–30 seconds, then diminishing. Check engine light with severe wear.
The thermostat in the small three-cylinder tends to stick in either the open or closed position. If stuck open, the engine never reaches operating temperature; if stuck closed, overheating threatens.
Symptoms: Engine stays permanently cold (thermostat open), or overheating warning (closed), poor heater performance in winter.
The G4HG suffers from recurring misfires between 2,000–3,500 rpm. Causes include worn spark plugs, porous HT leads or failed ignition coils — often facilitated by marten damage.
Symptoms: Stumbling on acceleration, vehicle lacks pull, jerky engine running in the mid-rpm range
Older G4HG engines lose catalytic converter efficiency through deposits and thermal stress. Operation with low-quality fuel accelerates the ageing process.
Symptoms: Check engine light (P0420), elevated HC emissions at MOT, faint sulphur smell after warm-up.
The G4HG valve stem seals wear and allow oil into the combustion chamber. Typical sign is blue smoke on cold start that clears after warm-up.
Symptoms: Blue smoke only after extended standstill or cold start, disappearing within 1–2 minutes.
The G4HG hydraulic valve lifters wear with poor oil quality or long change intervals. After cold start, loud tapping is typical, settling after a few minutes.
Symptoms: Metallic tapping after cold start that usually reduces or disappears at operating temperature
