Honda's Best Diesel

Honda's first in-house diesel: aluminium block, sounds metallic and sporty rather than tractor-like. Power band from 1,500 rpm, slick six-speed gearbox. Surprisingly lively for a diesel.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! DPF clogging on short trips

The diesel particulate filter needs sufficiently high exhaust temperatures to self-regenerate — temperatures not reached in pure urban use. From around 100,000 km, clogging with limp mode and warning lights becomes more common.

Symptoms: Warning light, engine limp mode, power loss, frequent dealer regeneration cycles

800–1,500 € from 100,000 km
!! Exhaust manifold cracks

Cracks form in the exhaust manifold under hard use, typically between 150,000 and 200,000 km. Honda acknowledged this manufacturing defect and extended the warranty to 7 years.

Symptoms: Ticking or hissing from the engine bay on cold start, exhaust smell

400–900 € from 160,000 km
! IMRC valve soot clogging (P2004)

Soot deposits block the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) valve. Vehicles built before 2008 received a free replacement. Symptoms include power loss and hesitation on acceleration. Fault code P2004 is typical.

Symptoms: Hesitation on acceleration, power loss, fault code P2004

150–400 € from 90,000 km
! MAP sensor soot contamination (P1069)

The MAP sensor sits near the EGR valve and gets heavily contaminated by soot deposits. This triggers fault codes P1069 or P0069 and causes performance issues. Cleaning is often sufficient.

Symptoms: Fault code P1069 or P0069, power fluctuations, increased fuel consumption

50–250 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! HVAC AC Compressor Failed

The AC compressor is a clear weak point of the CR-V RD. When it fails, the entire air conditioning system is disabled. Models from 2002–2004 are particularly often affected.

400–1,500 € from 100,000 km
!! Other Deposits in AWD System

The hydraulic-mechanical Real Time AWD system can build up oil deposits in vehicles rarely driven on slippery surfaces. Manifests as rattling on full lock.

100–400 € from 100,000 km
! Suspension Worn Front Control Arm Bushings

The rubber bushings in the front axle control arms wear out and should be replaced. Torn damper dust boots can also damage the damper itself.

150–500 € from 100,000 km
! Brakes Brake Disc Corrosion During Standing Periods

Brake discs tend to corrode and cause judder with infrequent use and extended periods of standing. The seized brake calipers often need replacing at the same time.

200–700 € from 80,000 km
! Rust Exhaust Flange Rust

The exhaust flange to the catalytic converter rusts through — a typical problem on older CR-V models. Should be inspected underneath during a pre-purchase check.

100–400 € from 120,000 km
