Honda Civic
Revised Honda diesel (2.2L i-DTEC), successor to the N22A with 150 hp. EGR carbon build-up, exhaust manifold cracks and timing chain stretch at very high mileage are known weak points. Overall solid for long-distance use.
Solid Diesel, No Hero
150–180 hp, very refined and quiet on the motorway. Smooth six-speed gearbox. Powerful without thrilling — a composed long-distance engine in the Accord and CR-V.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Honda recommends a timing chain inspection every 120,000 km that is not listed in the standard service booklet. From around 300,000 km owners report increasing noise. Replacement costs €2,500 and up.
Symptoms: Rattling or clattering from the timing chain area on cold start
The EGR valve is the most common cause of power loss. Carbon deposits and cracks in the valve trigger limp mode. Short-trip driving significantly accelerates carbon build-up.
Symptoms: Power loss, engine limp mode, hesitation, increased fuel consumption
Like the predecessor N22A, the exhaust manifold is prone to cracking from around 150,000 km. Honda developed a reinforced replacement manifold and fits it under goodwill.
Symptoms: Ticking on cold start, exhaust smell in the engine bay, gradual power loss
The revised N22B DPF also requires sufficient exhaust temperature for regeneration, which is not reached in urban use. Regular motorway runs are essential.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, engine limp mode, noticeably reduced power
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
On 2014–2015 models metal shavings in the ABS control unit can impair brake pressure. Honda carried out an official recall; check vehicles with a dealer before purchase.
The rear brake calipers tend to seize, especially on city cars used predominantly for short trips. Regular maintenance and lubrication are essential.
The 9th-generation Civic frequently receives lighting-related defects at the MOT. Headlights, rear lights, and fog lights should be checked regularly.
Owners report loud wind and tyre noise at motorway speeds that becomes tiring over time. Sound insulation measures were rated as insufficient.
