– Be Careful
Engine 4EE2 – Be Careful 2,650–8,100 €

Honda 2.2 i-CTDi diesel, closely related to the N22A. High maintenance demands: cracked exhaust manifolds, early clutch wear, DPF problems on short trips.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Not a Honda — and you can tell

Isuzu diesel in Civic clothing: rattly on cold start, droning under load, jerky in town. Neither efficiency nor driving pleasure convinces. A foreign body in the Honda line-up.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! Exhaust manifold cracks — known material defect

The exhaust manifold on the 2.2 i-CTDi typically cracks between 150,000 and 200,000 km. Honda acknowledged this as a material defect and extended the warranty to 7 years.

Symptoms: Ticking or knocking noise from the engine bay on cold start, exhaust smell inside the cabin

400–900 € from 160,000 km
!! Clutch and dual-mass flywheel worn prematurely

Faulty pressure plates cause premature clutch wear from as early as 65,000–85,000 km. Replacing the clutch together with the dual-mass flywheel is very expensive.

Symptoms: Slipping clutch, juddering on take-off, clutch pedal sinking to the floor

800–1,800 € from 75,000 km
!! DPF clogging under short-trip use

The diesel particulate filter does not regenerate fully under exclusive short-trip use and becomes blocked. Regular motorway runs at higher revs are essential.

Symptoms: Power loss, DPF warning light, frequent forced regeneration, increased fuel consumption

500–1,500 € from 100,000 km
!! Injectors — burned copper washers causing exhaust blow-by

Copper sealing washers on the injectors can burn through, allowing exhaust gases to enter the injection bore. Replacing the washers in time prevents more serious consequential damage.

Symptoms: Rough running, smoke, exhaust smell of engine oil, power loss under load

200–600 € from 120,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Rust Rust on Wheel Arches, Sills and Fuel Filler

Typical rust spots are the rear wheel arches, the area around the fuel filler cap, and the inner sills. Tailgate hinges and bonnet guides are also vulnerable.

300–1,500 € from 120,000 km
!! Suspension Worn Strut Top Mounts

Failed strut top mounts are a known problem. Listen for creaking noises that transmit through to the steering wheel on a test drive — affects EP1 and EP3 equally.

150–400 € from 80,000 km
!! HVAC Air Conditioning Failure

The air conditioning fails at higher mileages. Typical causes are a faulty relay or the compressor. Considered a Honda-typical problem of this era.

200–1,000 € from 100,000 km
! Interior Loose Seat Bushings

The rubber bushings of the seat mountings wear out at around 50,000–60,000 km, causing an unpleasant wobble in the driver's seat.

50–200 € from 55,000 km
! Body Water Ingress Through Tailgate

A design flaw in the tailgate causes water to collect in the upper section and run into the interior when the tailgate is opened. Antenna seals also fail.

50–200 € from 80,000 km
