GMC Sierra 1500

L84 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 355 hp Automatic Pickup 2019โ€“2025
โœ– Stay Away!
Engine L84 โœ– Stay Away! 9,600โ€“35,100 $

5.3L V8, iron block, the most-produced truck engine in North America. DFM shuts down up to 15 of 16 firing patterns โ€” and that's the problem. Lifter needle bearings starve for oil in deactivated cylinders, skid across cam lobes, send metal through the engine. Two class actions pending. A $200 Range disabler buys time; a $2,500 mechanical delete with DOD-delete cam is the permanent fix. Run 0W-20 Dexos, change at 5,000 miles maximum.

Fun Factor? Decent

5.3 V8 T1XX โ€” MultiPro tailgate, DFM lifter bill

Sierra T1XX differentiates with the MultiPro 6-way tailgate and CarbonPro bed option. The tailgate actuators fail, the step jams in winter, the load stop doesn't lock. The 5.3 underneath has DFM lifter concerns identical to the Silverado. Premium trim, shared-platform problems.

Engine Weaknesses 3

!! AFM/DFM Lifter Failure โ€” Class Action

THE GM truck problem: deactivated cylinder lifters wear from oil starvation. Needle bearing skids on cam lobe, metal debris in oil. Two class actions pending. $3,500-8,500 repair. AFM/DFM delete kit as permanent fix.

Symptoms: Loud ticking/knocking, misfires, rough running, check engine, sometimes from just 25k miles

3,500โ€“8,500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Oil Consumption โ€” Piston Rings (Class Action) 2011โ€“2021

Separate class action: $150M settlement for 2011-2021. Piston rings let oil pass โ€” 1 quart per 2,000 miles in severe cases.

Symptoms: Blue smoke, dropping oil level, fouled spark plugs

2,000โ€“6,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Timing Chain Wear

Same issue as LV3 โ€” chain and guides from ~100k miles.

Symptoms: Cold start rattle, P0008/P0016

1,000โ€“2,500 $ from 160,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Electronics Ground Strap Corrosion โ€” Cascading Electrical Failures

Corroded sub-frame ground strap causes simultaneous power steering and brake assist failures. Wiring harness chafing on ECM causes limp mode. Same platform issue as Silverado T1XX.

200โ€“1,500 $ from 50,000 km
!! Gearbox 10L80 10-Speed Transmission Shudder โ€” Class Action

10L80 transmission develops harsh shifts and shudder. Multiple class actions filed. GM fluid flush (Mobil 1 LV ATF HP) helps temporarily. Severe cases require torque converter or complete transmission replacement under warranty extension.

2,000โ€“8,500 $ from 40,000 km
!! Rust Frame Wax Coating Peels โ€” Premature Rust

Factory wax coating peels off frames within months of purchase. Visible surface rust on new trucks. GM issued service bulletin acknowledging the issue. Same problem across all T1XX platform trucks (Sierra, Silverado).

300โ€“2,000 $ from 30,000 km
!! Electronics Shift-to-Park Malfunction โ€” Key Stuck

Shift to Park warning appears with transmission already in Park. Key gets stuck, battery drains overnight. Caused by worn shift cable bushing or electronic gear selector contact issue.

300โ€“1,500 $ from 50,000 km
! Body MultiPro Tailgate โ€” Motor and Hinge Failures

Sierra-exclusive MultiPro 6-way tailgate has actuator latch failures (micro-switch sends false signal), hinge binding, and step deployment issues. Load stop does not lock open. Exposed mechanisms vulnerable to dirt, ice, and salt. PIT5895A TSB for 2022 refresh disable function. Warranty covers most failures but repeat visits common.

150โ€“3,000 $ from 50,000 km
! Body Power Retractable Assist Step โ€” Motor and Module Failures

Power running boards fail to deploy, retract immediately, or deploy randomly when parked. Motor failure on one side common from ~60k miles. GM service update: reprogram K4 Assist Step Control Module (RPO B3L/BRS). Physical motor failure: $190 OEM part, $850 dealer installed.

150โ€“1,600 $ from 60,000 km
