2.0 TDCi 155 kW/210 hp PowerShift, S-Max II (2015-2019) / Galaxy III

Fun Factor? Decent

Strong Diesel Van

210 hp EcoBlue: impressively well-powered for a van.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Continental Injector Coating Defect (2019)

Continental injectors with a faulty internal coating (vehicles built Feb–Sep 2019). The coating delaminates and blocks the injector. Ford service action: free injector replacement (Ford TSB-20-2335). Affected vehicles: Transit, Ranger, Focus, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy, Edge.

Symptoms: Hesitation, poor idle, power reduction, increased fuel consumption, limp mode

0–2,000 € from 50,000 km
!! DPF Clogging from Injector Soot Ingestion

Faulty injectors generate excessive soot that prematurely clogs the DPF. On the high-output variant (190 hp), soot also blocks the low-pressure filter of the dual EGR system. Repair requires simultaneous replacement of injectors AND DPF (TSB-20-2335). Replacing the DPF alone does not resolve the issue long-term.

Symptoms: Fault codes P2002, P02EC, P02FA, check engine light, power reduction

500–2,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Oil Bath Belt Clogs Oil Pump Strainer

The oil bath timing belt disintegrates and clogs the oil pump strainer with debris particles. The engine dies from oil starvation β€” bearings, crankshaft, camshaft and turbocharger are destroyed.

Symptoms: No prior warning: oil pressure drops, engine runs rough, then total destruction. Belt itself may look intact visually.

1,900–2,300 € from 100,000 km
!! Premature Turbocharger Failure from Oil Starvation

The 2.0 EcoBlue turbocharger can fail before 50,000 km. Cause: belt debris in the oil circuit or overdue oil change intervals clog the oil feed to the turbo bearing.

Symptoms: Whistling on acceleration, noticeable power loss, blue smoke. Turbo warning light may not illuminate.

1,400–2,500 € from 60,000 km
!! EGR-Induced Cylinder Wall Abrasion

A design-inherent uneven distribution of EGR exhaust gases leads to excessive soot ingestion in the middle cylinders. Soot particles cause abrasive wear from piston rings β€” compression loss and engine replacement required.

Symptoms: Rough idle, increased oil consumption, white or black smoke, high fuel trim correction values stored in ECU.

4,500–6,500 € from 130,000 km
!! NOx Sensor Failure (SCR System)

The NOx sensor in the SCR exhaust aftertreatment system fails prematurely. Fault code P20EE is typical. AdBlue consumption increases measurably as the system reverts to a base map. Sensor replacement is relatively inexpensive.

Symptoms: Check engine light P20EE, increased AdBlue consumption, occasional no-start after many km

200–600 € from 100,000 km
!! EGR Valve Carbon Buildup

The EGR valve on the 2.0 EcoBlue clogs with soot deposits, leading to power loss, increased fuel consumption and engine fault warning. Cleaning or replacement required.

Symptoms: Engine fault warning, power drop, increased fuel consumption, hesitation at part throttle

300–900 € from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Cooling EcoBoost engine block: hairline cracks causing coolant loss

The 1.5- and 2.0-litre EcoBoost engines in the S-Max II are susceptible to hairline cracks in the engine block, causing coolant loss and in the worst case engine damage. Particularly affected are model years before mid-2019.

1,500–6,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Gearbox Powershift dual clutch: juddering and gearbox fault

The 6-speed Powershift dual-clutch gearbox in the S-Max II is prone to clutch wear, juddering when pulling away, sticking in gears and limp mode activation. Repair costs are considerable.

2,000–5,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Other Recall: corroded rear axle bolts (2015–2020)

Ford recalled over 200,000 Galaxy and S-Max vehicles in Europe because the original bolts securing the rear trailing arms can fracture from severe corrosion. If they break the rear axle can fail β€” acute accident risk.

0–0 €
!! Suspension Rear axle: corrosion on track rod ends and bolts

Corrosion occurs at the rear axle of the S-Max II on track rod ends and axle bolts. Ford recalled affected vehicles. On untreated examples, fracture and loss of driving safety are a risk.

200–800 € from 60,000 km
! Electronics Adaptive headlights: control unit failure

The adaptive headlight control unit in the S-Max II occasionally fails, disabling automatic beam levelling. The failure is listed as a common finding in TÜV reports.

300–900 € from 80,000 km
! Rust Tailgate: rust at folded edges

On the Ford S-Max II, rust forms at the tailgate β€” particularly on lower folded edges and hinge holes β€” with increasing age. Tow bars are also affected, as corrosion protection around the mounting point often deteriorates.

400–1,500 € from 100,000 km
! Electronics Sync 3 infotainment: crashes and interface faults

The Sync 3 infotainment system freezes during temperature fluctuations or after extended standstill and needs to be restarted. Bluetooth connections drop and voice control responds unreliably, particularly on newer vehicles after OTA updates.

300–1,200 € from 80,000 km
! Brakes Brake discs: above-average wear front and rear

TÜV statistics and driver reports confirm above-average brake disc wear on the S-Max II at both front and rear axles. Brake hoses also become brittle with age, which can lead to loss of braking effect.

200–700 € from 80,000 km
