Ford Mustang
Ford 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 3726cc. Mustang S197 base engine (2011-2014). 305 hp / 227 kW. The only V6 Mustang with a genuinely sporting character.
V6 Convertible
V6 in the open Mustang: less sound than the V8, but rear-wheel drive and convertible feeling make it fun.
Engine Weaknesses 7
The 3.7L V6 Cyclone in the Mustang S197 shows camshaft phaser problems similar to the V8. Hydraulic phasers run on guide rails at low oil pressure, causing rattling.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, metallic clicking from the timing chain at low RPM
The 3.7L V6 Cyclone in the Mustang (longitudinal installation) has an externally chain-driven water pump. When the shaft seal fails, coolant runs onto the ground. Timely replacement prevents overheating damage.
Symptoms: Coolant puddle under vehicle, rising engine temperature, pressure warning light activates
The 3.7 V6 shares the problem of older Ford engines with spark plug threads stripping in the aluminium cylinder head. Plugs must only be changed when the engine is cold and to the correct torque.
Symptoms: Loose spark plugs, compression loss, misfires, power drop in individual cylinders.
Ignition coils on the 3.7L V6 Cyclone fail intermittently. As the engine has six coils, replacing the full set when one fails is recommended.
Symptoms: Hesitation, misfires, engine warning light, P030x fault codes
Valve stem seals on the 3.7 V6 wear at higher mileages and cause oil consumption. Replacement from above without removing the engine is possible with specialist tools.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, oil consumption above 0.3 L/1,000 km, blue smoke under braking after overrun.
The Duratec 37 (3.7 V6 Cyclone) with Ti-VCT has a maintenance-free timing chain, but it wears prematurely with extended oil change intervals. A stretched chain can trigger cam timing errors.
Symptoms: Fault code for cam timing (Bank 2 Sensor A); check engine light; slight rattling on cold start; power loss at mid-range RPM.
The Duratec 37 is prone to oil loss via the crankshaft rear oil seal on the flywheel side at higher mileages. Oil reaches the clutch and destroys it on manual gearbox versions.
Symptoms: Oil patches under the vehicle centre-rear; clutch slip on manual gearbox; oil smell after driving.
Vehicle Weaknesses 12
On the S197 (especially the V6 4.0L), the thermostat housing cover can crack and lose coolant. Leaking coolant hoses and corroded connections are also common on older examples. Overheating is a risk without timely inspection.
The formed auxiliary push rod in the folding mechanism tears off or breaks out, potentially causing irreparable damage to the entire hood frame. Frame replacement costs approx. โฌ6,000.
The glass pane permanently separates from the hood fabric. According to specialists a permanent re-bond is not possible. The hood must be replaced entirely.
The S197's standard braking system is clearly undersized for spirited driving. Vehicles without the optional Brembo package show reduced deceleration (fade) after just a few hard stops.
The S197 Mustang's solid rear axle is known for wheel hop during acceleration and thumping noises from the rear. Soft bushings, the Panhard rod and anti-roll bar connections wear early.
The S197 Mustang never came to Germany officially. US import vehicles often lack sufficient underbody corrosion protection for European winter conditions. Frame, fasteners and cavities rust severely without additional treatment.
The S197's front axle geometry changes through wear on dampers, bushings and lower control arm bearings. In European road use, uneven tyre wear and tracking problems appear earlier than expected from US use.
Seals on the hood mechanism hydraulic cylinders become brittle and allow hydraulic fluid to leak. Fluid drips onto seat belts and trim, and the hood closes slowly or incompletely.
Water drain hoses in the hood well block up with leaves and debris. Water backs up and runs into the boot, potentially flooding electronics and the spare wheel well.
Hard-plastic trim and interior sound deadening of the S197 are typical for an American car but noticeably below German standards. Rattles, creaks and wind noise increase significantly with age.
Fabric straps in the folding mechanism go slack after 5โ7 years. Loose tension straps cause malfunctions during folding and can cause consequential damage to the centre bow.
Torsional stiffness of the S197 convertible is only 9,500 Nm/ยฐ compared to 21,000 Nm/ยฐ on the coupรฉ. The dashboard and windscreen vibrate on rough roads, and the body creaks audibly.
