Ford Ka+
85 hp version of the 1.2L Ti-VCT (1196cc). Used in Ka+ with 5-speed manual. Also known as YSKE variant.
Decent Ka+
85 hp in the Ka+: adequate for a small car. No thrills, but fit for everyday use.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The 1.2 Ti-VCT (Fiat Fire base) is an interference engine with a timing belt. Change interval 150,000 km or 10 years; check belt service history on used car purchase. Belt failure causes engine damage.
Symptoms: No warning symptom — sudden engine shutdown on belt failure. Knocking noises may indicate a slack belt.
The 1.2 Ti-VCT in the Ka+ uses a Fiat Fire derivative. The pencil coils on this block fail at higher mileage with misfires in the mid-rpm range, typically after 100,000 km.
Symptoms: Stumbling at 1,500–2,500 rpm, fault code P030x, rough engine note, occasional hesitation on acceleration
Thermostats on the 1.2 Ti-VCT (Fiat Fire derivative) occasionally stick open. Engine does not reach operating temperature; fuel consumption rises. Inexpensive replacement recommended.
Symptoms: Temperature gauge permanently low, poor heater output, increased consumption
The 1.2 Ti-VCT is very sensitive to non-approved spark plugs. Bosch plugs and other non-approved types cause misfires and rough pull-away after only a few thousand kilometres.
Symptoms: Engine stumbles on acceleration and pull-away, misfires at low rpm, engine warning light may illuminate.
Individual ignition coils on the 1.25 Duratec frequently fail between 80,000–110,000 km. Stumbling and misfires in the mid-rpm range are typical; coils and spark plugs should be replaced together.
Symptoms: Stumbling on acceleration between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, rough engine note, engine warning light illuminates, noticeable power loss
The Ford 1.25/1.4 Duratec (Sigma) valve cover gasket tends to leak from around 80,000 km. Oil drips onto hot engine components, producing a burnt oil smell; in the worst case it can cause an engine fire.
Symptoms: Burnt oil smell in engine bay, visible oil traces at valve cover, minor oil loss at spark plug gallery
