Ford Galaxy
2.0 Zetec-E 16V, 85 kW/116 hp, Galaxy I (WGR 1995-2006) - Ford engine
Family Van Mk1
The first Galaxy with 115 hp petrol: room for seven, adequate power for the family. No driving fun.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The 2.0L Zetec-E NSE (Galaxy MK1) is affected by the known swirl flap problem of the early Duratec family. Intake manifold inspection is mandatory when buying.
Symptoms: Rattling from the intake, engine damage from flap fragments in the combustion chamber
As with the NGA, the 2.0 Zetec-E NSE timing chain guides wear at high mileage. More heavily loaded in the heavier Galaxy.
Symptoms: Clicking on cold start, rattling, possible engine damage from chain jump
The 2.0 Zetec-E NSE shows typical oil consumption from failing valve stem seals above 130,000 km.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, oil level drops between changes
The 2.0 Zetec-E in the Galaxy WA6 frequently shows 'throttle position implausible' messages. The potentiometer or sensor delivers faulty values, causing the engine to enter limp mode.
Symptoms: Engine fault warning, power drop to limp mode RPM, stuttering at part throttle, clears after restart
The 2.0 16V Zetec in Mondeo Mk2/Mk3 and Focus also suffers from cracking of the plastic thermostat housing. Leaking at the O-ring between housing and cylinder head is the most common cause.
Symptoms: Slowly dropping coolant level; moisture traces below the thermostat; overheating warning after prolonged city driving.
The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) in the Zetec 2.0 16V fails in service, often after a timing belt change or from vibration damage. The vehicle stops and will not restart.
Symptoms: Engine dies suddenly and will not restart; check engine light illuminates; fault code P0335 (crankshaft sensor) in diagnostic tool.
