Ford Focus
Ford 1.5L EcoBlue (Duratorq TDCi) 95 hp (70 kW), 116 hp (85 kW) and 120 hp (88 kW). Focus IV. Also ZTDA (95 hp). Modern and efficient β watch the AdBlue level.
Diesel Entry
95 hp TDCi in the Mk4: acceptable for town, but the good chassis deserves more power.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Faulty injectors cause severe juddering and knocking on acceleration. Problem occurs from approx. 140,000β150,000 km. Multiple injectors become leaky or faulty simultaneously. Ford has replaced all 4 injectors in individual cases without a permanent fix.
Symptoms: Heavy juddering, knocking on acceleration, engine misfires, power loss
The 1.5 EcoBlue diesel can suffer from premature timing chain wear. Ford's recommended fix is to retrofit the weaker original chain with the reinforced 8mm version that is standard fit from 2023.
Symptoms: Rattling from engine area especially on cold start, engine warning light, rough engine note
Ford recalled approx. 8,400 vehicles (production October 2014 to April 2015) because the camshaft sprocket can fracture due to material fatigue and damage the engine.
The EGR cooler develops cracks from extreme thermal cycling. Coolant enters the intake tract and forms black foam in the expansion tank. In the worst case, hydraulic lock.
Symptoms: Black or oily foam in coolant expansion tank, coolant loss without external leak, white exhaust smoke, overheating tendency.
The DPF on the 1.5 EcoBlue is prone to clogging, especially in short-trip use. Ford has released software updates improving the regeneration strategy. Check whether the latest software update has been applied before purchase.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, power loss, engine warning light P2002
The EGR valve carbons up during short-trip driving. Manifests as stumbling and power loss, especially at low rpm. Cleaning every 80,000β100,000 km recommended for city drivers.
Symptoms: Stumbling under part load, increased fuel consumption, engine warning light
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Recall for 9,858 vehicles (OctβDec 2018) due to bolts at the brake pedal-to-master cylinder connection being at risk of fracture. Complete brake failure is possible.
Cracking and squeaking from the electric steering on parking manoeuvres. Isolated cases of steering failure with a warning message on cold start. Usually resolved under warranty.
On the 155 hp MHEV variants with manual gearbox, the synchro rings for 1st and 2nd gear wear prematurely. Failures documented from as low as 22,000 km. Ford does not offer improved replacement parts.
Early 2018β2019 model years had significant electrical issues: failed parking sensors, a faulty SYNC 3 system, defective stop-start and Auto Hold functions. Software updates resolve many problems.
The underbody has inadequate corrosion protection: weld seams unsealed, cavities open. Rust forms early in splash zones. The exhaust system corrodes quickly.
The SYNC 3 system freezes regularly on early DEH models (2018β2020), stops responding to touch input or shows a black screen. Software updates improve the issue.
