Ford Focus ST
2.0L EcoBlue Diesel 1995cc in the Focus ST DEH (MK4) β 190 hp / 140 kW, 400 Nm from 2,000 rpm. The only ST in the model's history with a diesel engine as a standalone variant. A Continental injector recall affects early examples (2019): injectors could release metallic particles and cause engine damage β check the service history carefully. AdBlue system and DPF increase maintenance requirements compared to the petrol variant. Buyers preferring the manual transmission are well advised β the 8-speed automatic can feel hesitant in Sport mode. The torque delivery makes it a genuine alternative to the petrol ST on B-roads.
Strong EcoBoost
190 hp EcoBoost with manual gearbox and the good Mk4 chassis β makes you want corners, genuine driving fun.
Engine Weaknesses 7
Continental injectors with a faulty internal coating (vehicles built FebβSep 2019). The coating delaminates and blocks the injector. Ford service action: free injector replacement (Ford TSB-20-2335). Affected vehicles: Transit, Ranger, Focus, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy, Edge.
Symptoms: Hesitation, poor idle, power reduction, increased fuel consumption, limp mode
Faulty injectors generate excessive soot that prematurely clogs the DPF. On the high-output variant (190 hp), soot also blocks the low-pressure filter of the dual EGR system. Repair requires simultaneous replacement of injectors AND DPF (TSB-20-2335). Replacing the DPF alone does not resolve the issue long-term.
Symptoms: Fault codes P2002, P02EC, P02FA, check engine light, power reduction
The oil bath timing belt disintegrates and clogs the oil pump strainer with debris particles. The engine dies from oil starvation β bearings, crankshaft, camshaft and turbocharger are destroyed.
Symptoms: No prior warning: oil pressure drops, engine runs rough, then total destruction. Belt itself may look intact visually.
The 2.0 EcoBlue turbocharger can fail before 50,000 km. Cause: belt debris in the oil circuit or overdue oil change intervals clog the oil feed to the turbo bearing.
Symptoms: Whistling on acceleration, noticeable power loss, blue smoke. Turbo warning light may not illuminate.
A design-inherent uneven distribution of EGR exhaust gases leads to excessive soot ingestion in the middle cylinders. Soot particles cause abrasive wear from piston rings β compression loss and engine replacement required.
Symptoms: Rough idle, increased oil consumption, white or black smoke, high fuel trim correction values stored in ECU.
The NOx sensor in the SCR exhaust aftertreatment system fails prematurely. Fault code P20EE is typical. AdBlue consumption increases measurably as the system reverts to a base map. Sensor replacement is relatively inexpensive.
Symptoms: Check engine light P20EE, increased AdBlue consumption, occasional no-start after many km
The 2.0 EcoBlue diesel (TXDA) from model years 2019/2020 has well-documented DPF problems. Faulty regeneration cycles lead to filter overfilling. Ford released software updates, but many customers had already replaced the DPF at their own cost.
Symptoms: MIL on, engine power reduced, DPF regeneration failing, increased fuel consumption
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Recall for 9,858 vehicles (OctβDec 2018) due to bolts at the brake pedal-to-master cylinder connection being at risk of fracture. Complete brake failure is possible.
Cracking and squeaking from the electric steering on parking manoeuvres. Isolated cases of steering failure with a warning message on cold start. Usually resolved under warranty.
On the 155 hp MHEV variants with manual gearbox, the synchro rings for 1st and 2nd gear wear prematurely. Failures documented from as low as 22,000 km. Ford does not offer improved replacement parts.
Early 2018β2019 model years had significant electrical issues: failed parking sensors, a faulty SYNC 3 system, defective stop-start and Auto Hold functions. Software updates resolve many problems.
The underbody has inadequate corrosion protection: weld seams unsealed, cavities open. Rust forms early in splash zones. The exhaust system corrodes quickly.
The SYNC 3 system freezes regularly on early DEH models (2018β2020), stops responding to touch input or shows a black screen. Software updates improve the issue.
