Ford Focus

B7DA 1.0L EcoBoost 85 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2018–2019
– Be Careful
Engine B7DA – Be Careful 3,050–12,100 $

1.0 EcoBoost Gen4 in the Focus DEH (MK4). Chain-driven, mHEV-ready. More reliable than the wet-belt predecessor, but shares EcoBoost-typical cooling and carbon issues.

Fun Factor? Decent

Economical entry level

85 hp TDCi: fine for city commuters, but the B-road becomes a workout. Sensible, not inspiring.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Oil Pump Timing Belt Disintegrating

Like all 1.0L EcoBoost generations, the B7DA relies on a wet belt running in oil for the oil pump. Wrong engine oil or overdue oil changes destroy the belt quickly and cause engine damage. Strict intervals (Ford 5W-20) are mandatory.

Symptoms: Oil pressure loss, engine noises, engine failure, sometimes no warning

400–3,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Front Cover Seal Leaking β€” Coolant Loss (TSI 15-1070)

The front cover seal on early 1.0 EcoBoost engines (up to approx. Feb. 2015) was not oil-resistant. Oil attacks the seal, leading to slow coolant loss. TSI 15-1070 addresses the problem.

Symptoms: Coolant level drops without visible external leak, temperature warning, whitish steam from engine bay.

700–1,400 $ from 60,000 km
!! Coolant Loss at Hose Connections

Despite the timing chain update, plastic couplings in the cooling system remain sensitive. Brittleness and leaks possible especially at high mileages.

Symptoms: Dropping coolant level, occasional temperature warning, coolant smell.

100–400 $ from 100,000 km
!! Turbo Underboost (P0299)

Occasional P0299 from a faulty boost solenoid or intercooler leak. Less common than Gen1/Gen2 but not impossible.

Symptoms: Code P0299, intermittent power loss especially on a cold engine.

150–500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Wastegate Linkage Rattling / Turbo Underboost

The wastegate linkage on the small turbocharger vibrates due to a leaking vacuum actuator. Leads to power loss and fault code P0299 (underboost).

Symptoms: Rattling noise from the turbo area, noticeable power loss, fault code P0299, engine enters limp mode.

300–1,200 $ from 80,000 km
! Carbon Build-Up on Intake Valves (GDI)

Direct injection without port washing also causes carbon build-up on intake valves in the Gen4 engine. Short-trip urban driving accelerates the process.

Symptoms: Stumbling on cold start, slight power loss over time.

300–700 $ from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Other Recall: Brake pedal pivot bolt at risk of fracture

Recall for 9,858 vehicles (Oct–Dec 2018) due to bolts at the brake pedal-to-master cylinder connection being at risk of fracture. Complete brake failure is possible.

0–0 $
!! Steering Steering noise and sporadic steering failure

Cracking and squeaking from the electric steering on parking manoeuvres. Isolated cases of steering failure with a warning message on cold start. Usually resolved under warranty.

300–1,200 $ from 60,000 km
!! Gearbox Synchro ring damage on manual gearbox (MHEV)

On the 155 hp MHEV variants with manual gearbox, the synchro rings for 1st and 2nd gear wear prematurely. Failures documented from as low as 22,000 km. Ford does not offer improved replacement parts.

600–1,800 $ from 40,000 km
!! Electronics Electronics issues β€” SYNC 3 and driver assistance systems

Early 2018–2019 model years had significant electrical issues: failed parking sensors, a faulty SYNC 3 system, defective stop-start and Auto Hold functions. Software updates resolve many problems.

0–500 $
!! Rust Poor underbody corrosion protection

The underbody has inadequate corrosion protection: weld seams unsealed, cavities open. Rust forms early in splash zones. The exhaust system corrodes quickly.

200–800 $ from 60,000 km
! Electronics SYNC 3 infotainment crashes and freezes

The SYNC 3 system freezes regularly on early DEH models (2018–2020), stops responding to touch input or shows a black screen. Software updates improve the issue.

0–600 $ from 30,000 km
