Ford Fiesta
Ford 1.1L 3-cylinder Dragon (1084cc). 71 hp (52 kW) and 75 hp (55 kW) in Fiesta Mk8 from 2017. Small, economical engine for urban use β watch coolant level.
Too Little Power
The 70 hp three-cylinder is too weak for anything other than town. Not recommended for commuters.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The 3-cylinder Dragon 1.1 Ti-VCT has individual pencil ignition coils. If one fails the engine runs very rough β more noticeable on a three-cylinder than a four-cylinder. Replacing all three coils is recommended.
Symptoms: Strong judder and vibration, clearly perceptible torque loss, OBD fault code P030x
Dragon 1.1 thermostats can stick in the open position, preventing the engine from reaching operating temperature. Fuel consumption and COβ emissions increase. Inexpensive to replace.
Symptoms: Temperature gauge permanently in the cold range, little cabin heat, increased fuel consumption
The 1.1 Dragon occasionally shows increased oil consumption at higher mileages. Small direct-injection three-cylinders are more sensitive to extended oil change intervals. Regular oil level checks recommended.
Symptoms: Oil level dropping between services, slight blue smoke on acceleration after standing
The 1.1 Ti-VCT XPJC is sensitive to spark plug wear. Non-approved plug types or overdue replacement intervals lead to misfires, rough running and increased fuel consumption.
Symptoms: Hesitation on acceleration, misfires at low rpm, check engine light flashing or steady, rough idle.
The individual ignition coils on the 1.25 Duratec fail frequently from 80,000β110,000 km. Hesitation and misfires in the mid-rev range are typical; coils and spark plugs should be replaced together.
Symptoms: Hesitation on acceleration between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, rough engine, check engine light, noticeable power loss
On the Ford 1.25/1.4 Duratec (Sigma) the valve cover gasket starts to leak from around 80,000 km. Oil drips onto hot engine components, producing a burning oil smell and in the worst case a risk of engine fire.
Symptoms: Burning oil smell from engine bay, visible oil residue on valve cover, slight oil loss at spark plug gallery
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Recall 21S13 for 1,568 vehicles (FebβMar 2021): seatbelt can tear and thus lose its protective function. Check recall status without delay.
The MK8's manual gearbox jumps out of 1st and 3rd gear. Cause: worn shift forks (sliding pieces) and excessive play at the gear lever. Early diagnosis recommended.
Plastic door edge protector strips break or detach from the door skin. Replacement is surprisingly expensive. Common cause: parking damage and thermal expansion.
The electronic immobiliser develops sporadic malfunctions from 80,000β100,000 km. Tyre pressure sensors become unreliable from 50,000β70,000 km and need replacing.
Rear shock absorbers leak and springs break through corrosion β the same pattern as the predecessor. The loaded rear axle is particularly vulnerable with a fully laden vehicle.
Rust and paint flaking develop at the door hinges on MK8 vehicles from around 50,000 km. Left untreated, rust can spread to the door bodywork.
The SYNC 3 infotainment on the MK8 shows Bluetooth audio drop-outs at low speeds and occasionally frozen screen displays. Software updates from Ford are partially available.
