Ford Fiesta

M1JN 1.0L EcoBoost 140 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2020–2023
– Be Careful
Engine M1JN – Be Careful 2,480–11,250 €

103 kW variant of the 1.0 EcoBoost Gen3 in the Fiesta HJ. Up-to-date three-cylinder with chain drive, slightly higher turbo stress level compared to M1JL due to increased boost pressure.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

ST Precursor

The 1.5 EcoBoost with 140 hp brings real sportiness to the Mk7 Fiesta. Direct handling, audible fun factor.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Degas Hose Coolant Loss

The plastic fitting on the turbo coolant hose at the expansion tank becomes brittle and can fracture. Rapid coolant loss with overheating risk.

Symptoms: Coolant level drops, temperature warning, visible steam from engine bay.

50–250 € from 80,000 km
!! Oil-Bath Timing Belt Worn Prematurely

The 1.0 EcoBoost M1JN uses a wet timing belt for the oil pump. Incorrect oil or neglected oil changes dissolve the belt and lead to engine damage. Cases are documented even at 70,000 km.

Symptoms: Brief flickering of the oil pressure warning light, engine noise under load β€” often total failure without prior warning.

300–4,500 € from 100,000 km
!! Front Cover Seal Leaking β€” Coolant Loss (TSI 15-1070)

The front cover seal on early 1.0 EcoBoost engines (up to approx. February 2015) was not oil-resistant. Oil attacks the seal, causing gradual coolant loss. TSI 15-1070 addresses the problem.

Symptoms: Coolant level drops without visible external leak, temperature warning, whitish steam from engine bay.

700–1,400 € from 60,000 km
!! Turbo Underboost (P0299)

At higher boost pressures more susceptible to boost solenoid failure or wastegate issues. Intermittent power loss especially under load.

Symptoms: Fault code P0299, noticeable power drop, engine feels flat.

150–600 € from 90,000 km
!! Catalytic Converter Failure

Premature catalytic converter failure with code P0420. Can become a cost issue from around 80,000 km.

Symptoms: Engine warning light P0420, reduced power, increased fuel consumption.

400–900 € from 80,000 km
!! Wastegate Rod Rattling / Turbo Underboost

The wastegate actuator rod on the small turbocharger vibrates due to a leaking vacuum actuator. Leads to power loss and fault code P0299 (underboost).

Symptoms: Rattling noise from turbo area, noticeable power drop, fault code P0299, engine in limp mode.

300–1,200 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Other Recall: Defective seatbelt

Recall 21S13 for 1,568 vehicles (Feb–Mar 2021): seatbelt can tear and thus lose its protective function. Check recall status without delay.

0–0 €
!! Gearbox Gear jump-out and shift problems on manual gearbox

The MK8's manual gearbox jumps out of 1st and 3rd gear. Cause: worn shift forks (sliding pieces) and excessive play at the gear lever. Early diagnosis recommended.

200–600 € from 60,000 km
! Body Door edge protection breaks and detaches

Plastic door edge protector strips break or detach from the door skin. Replacement is surprisingly expensive. Common cause: parking damage and thermal expansion.

50–200 €
! Electronics Immobiliser and tyre pressure sensors faulty

The electronic immobiliser develops sporadic malfunctions from 80,000–100,000 km. Tyre pressure sensors become unreliable from 50,000–70,000 km and need replacing.

80–400 € from 70,000 km
! Suspension Rear axle: shock absorbers and springs wearing out

Rear shock absorbers leak and springs break through corrosion β€” the same pattern as the predecessor. The loaded rear axle is particularly vulnerable with a fully laden vehicle.

200–500 € from 100,000 km
! Body Rust and paint flaking at door hinges

Rust and paint flaking develop at the door hinges on MK8 vehicles from around 50,000 km. Left untreated, rust can spread to the door bodywork.

50–300 € from 50,000 km
! Electronics SYNC 3 Bluetooth dropouts and display issues

The SYNC 3 infotainment on the MK8 shows Bluetooth audio drop-outs at low speeds and occasionally frozen screen displays. Software updates from Ford are partially available.

0–400 € from 30,000 km
