Ford F-150 Lightning
F-150 Lightning dual motor — Ford's electric pickup. 580 hp, Pro Power Onboard (9.6 kW outlets on the bed). Recall for HV battery defect (misaligned electrodes), 12V battery drains regularly, park system can let vehicle roll. Groundbreaking idea, problematic execution in the early years.
Lightning — the future for commuters with a garage, not for truck people
580 hp, Pro Power Onboard, instant torque: brilliant as a commuter with home charging. As a truck: range halves when towing, DC charging costs rising, rural infrastructure missing. Two HV battery recalls, 12V battery drains constantly, park system recall. Early adopters: convinced. Mass market: not yet. Ford cut prices dramatically — that says it all.
Engine Weaknesses 3
Misaligned electrodes can cause short circuit. Recall with inspection + possible battery replacement. Temporary 80% charge limit.
Integrated park module can prevent park from fully engaging.
DC/DC converter not OTA-updatable. Motorcycle-type battery too weak. Proactive replacement recommended.
Symptoms: Instrument cluster warnings, software updates fail, doors won't open
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Same 10R80 issue as 13th Gen — revised valve body from ~2022. TSB 24-2101.
Over 450,000 F-150 trucks from model years 2021-2022 recalled because voltage spikes can damage the wiper motor circuit board. Dealers replace the wiper motor free of charge.
Customer Satisfaction Program 21M08: power tailgate on the 14th Gen F-150 can open unexpectedly. Extended coverage: 10 years / 150,000 miles. Dealer rewires the tailgate mechanism at no charge.
12-inch SYNC 4 freezes, blackout, lagging. No 360° camera, no nav, no trailer control when failed.
Same design weakness as earlier F-150 generations. Pinion seal leaks are a frequent repeat repair on the 14th Gen. Proper fix requires re-setting bearing preload — shortcuts lead to rapid repeat failure.
