โ€“ Be Careful
Engine EcoBoost-3.5-V6-Gen2 โ€“ Be Careful 6,900โ€“25,700 $

3.5L EcoBoost V6 Gen2 โ€” revised twin-turbo with port injection (no more carbon). Cam phaser failure on 2017-2020 is THE topic (Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03, expired). Exhaust manifold studs break from turbo heat. Plastic valve covers crack. Still: the most popular F-150 engine and in Gen2 form significantly more reliable than Gen1.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

3.5 EcoBoost Gen2 in 14th Gen โ€” evolution, not revolution

400 hp, revised cam phasers (fewer issues than 2017-2020), 10R80 remains the concern. Still the most popular F-150 engine. Community: "They finally have the phasers under control โ€” now the transmission needs to follow."

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Cam Phaser Failure (2017-2020)

THE Gen2 topic: hydraulic phasers fail from ~50k miles. Ford CSP 21N03 (expired). $3-5k repair. July 2018 and October 2019 revisions improved the parts.

Symptoms: Knock/tick at warm idle, CEL P0011/P0012

800โ€“5,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Exhaust Manifold Warps โ€” Studs Break

Turbo heat + original design with too few studs โ†’ warping and breakage. Ticking on cold start.

Symptoms: Ticking/squeaking on cold start

600โ€“2,500 $ from 90,000 km
!! Turbo Coolant Line Leak

The bi-turbo coolant supply and return lines become brittle from thermal cycling and leak. Sudden coolant loss under load can cause overheating โ€” especially dangerous when towing.

Symptoms: Sweet smell, low coolant without visible puddle, overheat warning while towing

1,200โ€“3,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failure

HPFP failures are a known issue on the 3.5 EcoBoost. In severe cases the pump can fragment and damage the cylinder head โ€” resulting in $4,800+ repairs. Some trucks have needed three pumps before 100k miles.

Symptoms: Hard start, P0087 fuel rail pressure low, hesitation under boost, metallic knock on pump failure

600โ€“1,500 $ from 80,000 km
! Plastic Valve Cover Cracks

Plastic + heat cycles + mechanic error โ†’ crack. Oil on exhaust manifold. Parts backordered >6 months at times.

Symptoms: Oil smell, oil on exhaust manifold

500โ€“1,000 $ from 100,000 km
! Wastegate Rattle on Cold Start and Part Throttle

Well-known Gen2 issue: both turbo wastegate flaps develop excessive play and rattle loudly. Can recur after turbo replacement. When the flap no longer seals, underboost codes are triggered.

Symptoms: Loud rattle on cold start lasting up to a minute, P0299 underboost when flap play is severe

0โ€“4,000 $ from 50,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Gearbox 10-Speed Auto Shudder

Same 10R80 issue as 13th Gen โ€” revised valve body from ~2022. TSB 24-2101.

3,000โ€“7,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Other Recall 22S71: Wiper Motor Failure

Over 450,000 F-150 trucks from model years 2021-2022 recalled because voltage spikes can damage the wiper motor circuit board. Dealers replace the wiper motor free of charge.

0โ€“0 $
!! Body Tailgate Opens Unintentionally (CSP 21M08)

Customer Satisfaction Program 21M08: power tailgate on the 14th Gen F-150 can open unexpectedly. Extended coverage: 10 years / 150,000 miles. Dealer rewires the tailgate mechanism at no charge.

0โ€“300 $
! Electronics 12-Zoll SYNC 4 friert ein, Blackout, Lagging. Kein 360ยฐ-Kamera, kein Navi, kein Trailer-Control bei Ausfall.

12-inch SYNC 4 freezes, blackout, lagging. No 360ยฐ camera, no nav, no trailer control when failed.

0โ€“300 $
! Suspension Differential Pinion Seal Leak

Same design weakness as earlier F-150 generations. Pinion seal leaks are a frequent repeat repair on the 14th Gen. Proper fix requires re-setting bearing preload โ€” shortcuts lead to rapid repeat failure.

200โ€“600 $ from 60,000 km
