Ford F-150
2.7L EcoBoost V6 Gen1 β the entry-level turbo in the F-150. 325 hp from 2.7 liters: impressively efficient. Watch for valve guide defect on April 2016 β January 2017 production (TSB, free cylinder head replacement under warranty). Plastic oil pan leaks from thermal cycling. Carbon buildup like the 3.5L Gen1. Gen2 (2018+) fixes most issues.
2.7 EcoBoost β efficient and unremarkable, valve guide defect on 2016-2017
325 hp from 2.7 liters: impressively efficient, but not a character engine. Plastic oil pan leaks on almost all of them. Valve guide defect on April 2016 β Jan 2017 production (TSB, free head replacement). Carbon buildup Gen1. The engine you choose when fuel economy matters more than sound.
Engine Weaknesses 5
TSB 17-2077: valve guides in heads from April 2016 β Jan 2017 production defective. Free head replacement under warranty.
Symptoms: Blue/white smoke, oil consumption, CEL P0300-P0306
The 2.7 EcoBoost Gen1 is prone to internal wastegate wear β worn shaft and diaphragm failures in the actuator. One-sided failure causes asymmetric boost drop. Dealer turbo replacement often runs $4,000 for both.
Symptoms: P0299 underboost code, metallic ticking on deceleration, sluggish response under load
Ford TSB 20-2207 for 2018-2020 models: oil pools in the turbine housing when parked and burns off on the next startup. Revised oil supply tube (JU7Z-9T516-A) limits pooling.
Symptoms: White or blue smoke on cold start, oil smell after shutdown, no lasting damage if caught early
Plastic oil pan + aluminum block + RTV sealant β thermal warping β leak. Metal pan as aftermarket upgrade recommended.
Symptoms: Oil drops under engine
Same issue as 3.5L Gen1. Gen2 (2018+) with port injection fixed.
Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
10R80 auto: vibration at 35-45 mph like driving over rumble strips. Torque converter clutch slips. CDF clutch drum migration. Multiple TSBs, $5,500-7,000 repair.
Same issue as 12th Gen β 2014-2017 models with 3.5L EcoBoost. Safety recall covers free replacement of master cylinder and booster.
TSBs 15-0052 and 16-0155: door latch cables on the 2015-2017 F-150 can kink or freeze, causing doors to appear closed while actually unlatched β a safety hazard at speed.
Recall 21S53 for 2018 F-150: tailgate latch design allows the pawl to unlatch under normal driving conditions. Ford replaced both left and right latches on ~57,000 trucks.
Primer defect on aluminum body (2015-2019): paint peels from roof, hood, sides. Class action.
Front and rear pinion seals are a known weak point on the F-150. Repeat failure is common because many shops skip resetting bearing preload β without this step the new seal leaks again quickly.
