Ford F-150 Raptor
6.2L V8 in the Raptor โ Ford's answer to the demand for brute force without turbo. Generally robust, isolated valve spring issues on 2010-2011. Called a "stalwart of reliability" by the community. Replaced in 2014 by the EcoBoost Raptor.
6.2 V8 Raptor โ the last NA Raptor, the community mourns
411 hp naturally aspirated in the Raptor: no turbo, no complexity, V8 thunder instead of turbo whistle. Called a "stalwart of reliability" by the community. Replaced in 2014 by the EcoBoost Raptor โ many fans still miss the V8 sound. Watch for valve springs on 2010-2011. Used prices climbing.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Sporadic valve spring breakage on 2010-2011, quietly addressed by Ford.
Symptoms: Misfire, rattle, power loss
Ford TSB 15-0161 confirmed an internal leak of the baffle in the right valve cover on 2015-2016 models. The defective baffle allows oil to enter the PCV system, increasing consumption.
Symptoms: Higher than normal oil consumption, oil film on throttle body and intake, dark exhaust
The 6.2L Boss uses two spark plugs per cylinder (16 total), making plug changes twice as expensive. Under boost conditions plugs can seize and break during removal.
Symptoms: Misfire, rough idle, stumble under load
Rear main seal leaks on the 6.2L block require removing the transmission โ a labor-intensive repair. Occurs at high mileage or under heavy-load use.
Symptoms: Oil drops under the bellhousing, slow oil loss without visible external leak source
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Same issue as 11th Gen โ steel body without adequate corrosion protection.
On 2014-2017 F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost, brake fluid can migrate from the master cylinder into the brake booster. Safety recall: free replacement of both components at the dealer.
Steering rack seals leak.
The ABS module on 2007-2014 F-150 develops cold solder joint failures on the circuit board. ABS and TCS self-deactivate; speedometer may also go erratic or dead. Rebuild service available for ~$300.
Thermal stress from the defroster grid combined with a design weakness causes the rear window to shatter spontaneously in early 12th Gen trucks โ predominantly the 2010 model year.
