Ford Edge Sport
3.7L V6 naturally aspirated 3726cc. Duratec 37. Base engine Mustang VI 2015-2017. Delivered to Europe/Germany in small numbers only. Discontinued 2017.
305 hp crossover โ the fast family hauler nobody expected
The Edge Sport with the 3.7L V6 was genuinely quick for its era โ 0-60 in 6.5 seconds in a family SUV. AWD standard, firm suspension, 22-inch wheels. Same internal water pump concern as the 3.5. The Sport premium is worth it for the driving experience, but budget for water pump service and expensive tire replacements.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The 3.7L Duratec V6 (Mustang S197 V6, Kuga) shows rattle from hydraulic cam phasers at low oil pressure, like the Mustang V6 S197. Oil changes every 8,000 km are mandatory.
Symptoms: Rattle on cold start from the timing drive, sounds like a loose timing chain
The external water pump on the 3.7L Duratec V6 is prone to shaft seal leaks at mileages over 100,000 km. Coolant loss and overheating damage result.
Symptoms: Coolant leak from the side under the engine, engine temperature rising, warning light
On the transversely mounted 3.7 V6 the timing chain drives the internal water pump. If the pump fails, coolant enters the crankcase directly โ high risk of engine destruction if not stopped immediately.
Symptoms: Coolant loss without external leak, oil discoloured milky, temperature gauge rising.
The ignition coils on the 3.7L Duratec V6 fail irregularly. On a 6-cylinder engine, replacement as a set is more economical than individual replacement.
Symptoms: Hesitation, misfires, check engine light with P030x fault code
The Duratec 37 (3.7 V6 Cyclone) with Ti-VCT has a maintenance-free timing chain that nevertheless wears prematurely at long oil change intervals. A stretched chain spectrum can trigger cam timing faults.
Symptoms: Fault code for camshaft timing (bank 2 sensor A); check engine light; slight rattle on cold start; power loss at mid-range rpm.
The Duratec 37 is prone to oil loss via the crankshaft rear main seal at the flywheel end at higher mileages. Oil reaches the clutch and destroys it on manual gearbox variants.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle centre-rear; clutch slip on manual gearbox; oil smell after driving.
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
The Power Transfer Unit on AWD Edge models sits near the exhaust and runs extremely hot. The factory fill is sealed with no drain plug, so fluid degrades and is never serviced. Seals fail, fluid leaks onto the exhaust and burns off invisibly. Once empty, the PTU grinds itself to death. Ford TSB 10-22-4 acknowledged the issue. Replacement runs $1,500-$2,800. The number one hidden cost of first-gen Edge AWD ownership.
The 6F50 6-speed automatic develops torque converter shudder from a warped TCC backing plate. Felt as vibration at 40-50 mph during light acceleration. Ford TSB 11-12-10 addresses sluggish acceleration with harsh shifts from valve body design flaws. Progresses to slipping in 5th/6th gear. Full torque converter replacement or transmission rebuild required in severe cases.
The vacuum brake booster fails on 2010-2013 Edge models, causing a hard brake pedal and dramatically increased stopping distance. Ford extended warranty coverage to 10 years / 150,000 miles under Customer Satisfaction Program 14M02. Hissing sound from the booster area is the early warning sign.
The door latch contains an integrated ajar switch that fails electrically while the door latches mechanically. The driver door is most commonly affected. When stuck, the dome light stays on, draining the battery, and power locks will not engage. Ford TSB 15-0013 covers 2011-2013 Edge. The switch cannot be replaced separately โ the entire door latch assembly must be swapped. Over 600 NHTSA complaints on the 2013 model alone.
Brake rotors develop disk thickness variation (DTV) as early as 15,000-25,000 miles. The heavy SUV combined with undersized rotors causes excessive heat buildup. Uneven pad material transfer creates the pulsation. Sticking caliper guide pins make the problem worse. Proper bedding procedure and caliper service during pad changes prevents recurrence.
The SYNC 2 / MyFord Touch infotainment system in 2011-2014 Edge models suffers from underpowered processors, software bugs, and eventual hardware failure of the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module). Screen goes black, system freezes during use, backup camera fails. Ford warranty extension 12M02 covered APIM for 5 years. Replacement module costs $800-$1,500.
The optional panoramic Vista Roof develops drain tube clogs that cause water to overflow into the headliner and A-pillar trim. Interior water damage is common. In rare cases, the sunroof glass shatters spontaneously while driving โ a class action lawsuit covers Ford panoramic sunroofs from 2007+. The sunroof motor also fails, leaving the panel stuck open.
First-gen Edge models in salt belt states develop rust on rocker panels, rear wheel arches, and inner door panels. Paint bubbles appear within 4-5 years, progressing to perforation. The inner liftgate is also prone to corrosion. Factory undercoating is thin and breaks down quickly. Third-party rust proofing is highly recommended for northern-climate vehicles.
The liftgate gas struts lose pressure over time and can no longer hold the hatch open. The heavy liftgate drops slowly or slams shut unexpectedly. Power liftgate models may stall partially open when the motor cannot overcome weak struts. A cheap and straightforward DIY repair.
