Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Golden Mean

Best FIRE engine in the 500 family. Enough power for brisk city driving, and in the lightweight 500 it actually feels genuinely lively.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Ignition coil and ECU failure

Faulty ignition coils are also a known issue on the 1.4 FIRE. In severe cases, a coil failure can affect the ECU. Fault codes P0351/P0352 typically occur at operating temperature.

Symptoms: Juddering at operating temperature, engine warning light, occasional power loss, rough idle

80–400 € from 90,000 km
!! Water pump leaking

As with the 1.2 FIRE, the water pump of the 1.4 FIRE is considered a wear item that should be replaced at the latest during the timing belt service. Workshops report frequent leaks from 80,000 km.

Symptoms: Coolant loss, temperature rise, coolant level drops without visible leak

200–450 € from 90,000 km
!! Fuel pump with pressure loss

On the Grande Punto with 1.4 FIRE, fuel pumps have been documented that could no longer maintain operating pressure of 3 bar. Result: power loss, rough running and engine warning light.

Symptoms: Significant power loss, engine won't pull, engine warning light, juddering under load

200–500 € from 100,000 km
! Coolant temperature sensor and cold-start stalling

The 1.4 8V tends to cold-start problems from a faulty or incorrectly controlled coolant temperature sensor. Typically: engine starts, stops after 2–4 seconds and only starts on repeated attempts.

Symptoms: Engine starts and immediately stops, only driveable after multiple attempts, only with cold engine

50–200 € from 80,000 km
! Lambda sensor failed due to age

The lambda sensor of the 1.4 FIRE wears out on schedule and generates mixture fault codes and increased fuel consumption when faulty. Documented multiple times on the Grande Punto and Panda 169.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, increased consumption, mixture fault code, unstable idle

100–300 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 10

!! Suspension Rear Springs Break

Rear springs on the Fiat Panda (169) break above-average frequently, causing the vehicle to lean and MOT defects. Spring set around €60–150.

150–400 € from 80,000 km
!! Rust Door Edges and Wheel Arches

Door bottom edges and wheel arches of the Fiat Panda (169) rust, particularly on vehicles from the fifth MOT onwards. MOT data shows above-average rust rates.

200–1,200 € from 100,000 km
!! HVAC AC Compressor Defective

AC compressors on the Fiat Panda (169) fail at higher mileage. Cost of a reconditioned compressor: €350–600 plus fitting.

450–900 € from 120,000 km
! Body Door Seals and Door Hinges

Door seals on the Fiat Panda (169) harden and let in moisture and wind noise after a few years. Door hinges tend to develop play.

50–250 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Window Regulator Mechanism

Manual and electric window regulators on the Fiat Panda (169) jam or fail. The winding mechanism wears out, cables on the electric version break.

80–250 € from 80,000 km
! Other Handbrake Seizes When Not Used

The handbrake of the Fiat Panda (169) seizes after prolonged non-use or outdoor standing. Particularly with rear drum brakes.

100–300 €
! Steering Steering Play and Worn Tie Rod Ends

Tie rod ends and steering rack of the Fiat Panda (169) develop play with increasing mileage. Electric power steering can cost up to €2,500 when defective.

80–2,500 € from 90,000 km
! Electronics Lighting System Defective at MOT

MOT data shows above-average lighting defects for the Fiat Panda (169). Headlight alignment is poor across all model years.

30–250 €
! HVAC Heater Blower Resistor Burns Out

The blower resistor of the Fiat Panda (169) fails frequently. Typical: only the highest speed still works. Resistor costs around €10–30.

30–150 € from 80,000 km
i Gearbox Stiff Gearshift in Cold Weather

On the Fiat Panda (169), the gearshift is particularly stiff in cold temperatures. Bushes in the gear linkage harden.
