Fiat Doblo
Solid 1.6 MultiJet diesel with a known EGR weakness and a rare but serious crankshaft defect in the Tipo.
Small Diesel, Big Van
77 kW from 1.3 litres — economical but really too weak for the 263. City car.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Timing belt tensioners and idler pulleys wear out faster than the belt itself. If the timing belt breaks or jumps on this interference engine, total engine damage results.
Symptoms: Loud engine noises, engine fault after timing belt replacement if incorrectly positioned
Fiat Tipo had 1.6 MultiJet engines fitted with undersized crankshafts that lead to oil pressure loss and catastrophic engine failure. Fiat recommends immediate engine shutdown at warning signs.
Symptoms: Flashing engine warning light, oil pressure warning, loud noise at engine failure
The EGR valve carbons up regularly and causes juddering and poor throttle response. The EGR opening is also noticeable under normal operation as a brief power interruption at approximately 2,000 rpm.
Symptoms: Juddering at approximately 2,000 rpm especially in 2nd gear, poor throttle response
Injectors wear out and must be replaced individually or as a set. Each unit must be programmed to the ECU after replacement.
Symptoms: Rough running, poor cold start, increased consumption, engine warning light
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
Engine ECUs on the Fiat Doblo (263) can produce fault code entries and misfires. Blue&Me infotainment does not work reliably.
Underbody and sills on the Fiat Doblo (263) rust more heavily than on passenger cars under intensive commercial vehicle use.
Rear axle springs on the Fiat Doblo (263) break or fatigue prematurely under intensive use or loading. Front springs can also break (around 70,000 km).
Front strut mounts on the Fiat Doblo (263) are a known weak point and wear out very early.
The sliding door on the Fiat Doblo (263) wears from frequent opening and closing. Bowden cables for door locking can jam from moisture.
The braking system on the Fiat Doblo (263) shows typical commercial vehicle wear; brake lines can corrode under the floor.
The AC on the Fiat Doblo (263) fails sporadically or delivers unevenly cold air.
Tie rod ends and ball joints on the Fiat Doblo (263) wear more heavily than on passenger car models due to the higher vehicle weight.
The exhaust flex pipe on the Fiat Doblo (263) typically breaks around 100,000 km from metal fatigue and corrosion.
Noticeable wind noise on the Fiat Doblo (263) from around 160 km/h. Poorly fitting sliding door seals make the problem worse.
