Fiat Abarth 595 312
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Abarth 595 (type 312, from 2012) is the hotted-up 500 — an uncompromisingly small bundle of fun with the unmistakable Record Monza soundtrack. The mild-mannered Cinquecento becomes a snappy hot hatch in miniature, scoring on character but bringing typical weaknesses too.
All 595s use the 312A1-Abarth (1.4 T-Jet turbo) in various states of tune — from 145 hp (base) through 165 hp (Turismo) to 180 hp (Competizione), with codes 312B4/312B3 on the facelift. The engine is fundamentally robust but has two known Achilles' heels: the standard exhaust manifold often cracks from as little as 30,000–40,000 km (whistling under load, lost boost) — the permanent fix is the reinforced esseesse manifold. And the turbocharger tolerates no neglect: always allow a short cool-down after hard driving, or the oil cokes in the bearing. Ignition coils are a wear item as on all T-Jets.
Three themes define the 595. First the manifold (crack → whistle → lost boost). Second the turbo (heat, oil care). Third, on the automated MTA gearbox (if fitted): regular calibration and hydraulic-oil changes are mandatory, or the clutch slips.
Test drive: Listen for whistling under load (manifold). Start cold and check boost build-up. On the MTA pull away repeatedly (jerking = clutch/calibration). Demand oil-change history and manifold status.
Market 2026: Early 595s (2012–2015) from around $10,000, well-kept later cars $14,000–20,000, special editions and cabrios (595C) at a premium.
Insider pick: A manual 595 (Turismo or Competizione) with a retrofitted esseesse manifold and documented oil care. The manual sidesteps the MTA problems, the reinforced manifold the main annoyance — and the sound stays the same. For enthusiasts the smallest genuine thrill with cult character, as long as maintenance is taken seriously.

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Strut Mount Wear from Koni Sports Suspension The Koni sports suspension on the 595 loads strut mounts harder than on the standard 500. Wear documented from 7,000–14,000 km. Multiple replacements under warranty; thereafter owner's cost of 150–500 Euro. Symptoms: Clicking when steering and braking, creaking under load changes, knocking from front axle from 15,000 km | Low | |
| Rear wheel bearings wear early The rear wheel bearings are a known weak point of the Fiat 500 platform. Failures documented between 10,000 and 55,000 km, sometimes repeatedly on the same car. Symptoms: Humming or droning from the rear that changes sides in corners; it disappears in right-hand bends = right bearing worn. from 35,000 km | Low |
