Fiat 500L
Technically interesting twin-cylinder turbo with high wear risk. MultiAir unit, timing chain and crankcase ventilation are documented system weaknesses. Repairs are expensive, and serious failures have occurred as early as 40,000β80,000 km. Only acceptable with a complete service history and correct oil specification.
Two-Stroke Feeling Deluxe
In the lightweight 500 with manual gearbox the TwinAir is an experience: unique two-cylinder sound, surprising torque, real go-kart feeling. If only the oil consumption wasn't there.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The electrohydraulic MultiAir unit fails regularly on the TwinAir, sometimes from as early as 40,000 km. Repair costs of β¬1,500β3,000 are typical. Incorrect engine oil (5W40 instead of 0W30) significantly accelerates wear.
Symptoms: Engine runs roughly, misfires on individual cylinders, engine warning light, start/stop system unavailable
The chain tensioner of the TwinAir fails with insufficient oil supply or at high mileage. Documented case: timing chain jumped a tooth at 38,000 km, repair costs β¬1,650. Rattling after cold start is a typical warning sign.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling after cold start, engine warning light, rough running, in extreme cases won't start
A faulty evaporator/oil separator unit in the crankcase breather leads to increased oil consumption on the TwinAir, as oil is blown into the intake tract. Repair costs β¬150β300, but early diagnosis is critical.
Symptoms: Blue smoke from exhaust, rising oil consumption, rough idle, overpressure at oil filler cap
Faulty ignition coils were reported so frequently on the TwinAir that Fiat carried out a recall and warranty extension. Coil replacement under warranty is extensively documented.
Symptoms: Misfires, engine warning light, rough running, engine runs on one cylinder only
Early TwinAir examples have insufficiently sealed timing chain covers, causing oil loss from this point. The problem also occurs after turbo repairs.
Symptoms: Oil spots under vehicle, oil smell, falling oil level
Vehicle Weaknesses 11
Sills, wheel arches, floor area and front section rust prematurely. With heavy rust, welding work is required that can quickly exceed the vehicle's value.
The 500L's EPS shows intermittent jerking at low steering speeds, especially in cold weather. Fiat classifies this as 'normal for the new steering generation'. Control unit replacement up to 1,000 Euro.
Engine warning lights and other warning lamps appear without a clear defect. The infotainment system freezes or reboots. The horn also regularly fails due to poor contact.
Brake pads and discs on the 500L wear faster than average. Individual reports describe completely worn discs at just 23,500 km.
The 500L's front axle shows typical wear patterns at control arm bushings and anti-roll bar mounts. Rattling noises and vague handling result.
Early 500L models were delivered from the factory with a 48 Ah battery that is too weak for operating the Dualogic gearbox. The system requires at least 50 Ah.
Owners report water leaks at door seals and windows leading to damp interiors and mould growth. Paint quality is considered below average.
AC compressors on the 500L fail prematurely. Noises from the engine bay when the AC is on are an early warning sign.
Even on the manual 500L, owners report decreasing shift precision with higher mileage. Gears become harder to engage, especially reverse.
The 500L's dashboard is made of hard plastic that warps with temperature changes and creaks audibly. Noises especially between 1,600 and 2,000 rpm.
Seatbelt guides sit loosely and rattle while driving. Metal seat latch clips don't fit precisely and cause rattling that can be solved with tape padding.
